Carson's departure was very instructive. He was a television institution for decades and he generated millions in revenue for NBC, but when he wanted to handpick David Letterman as his successor, NBC wouldn't listen to a word he had to say. They just gave him the television equivalent of a gold watch and sent him off to Malibu.
And it should've been Letterman. Hands down the best late night show since Carson called it a career.
