Screw macs. I have a Navy-issued Ibook for official purposes, but I use my personal Compaq Presario R3200 usually -
3.2 ghz (fast enough)
64 bit processer AMD Athlon
80 gb hard drive
512mb DDR Ram
128mb dedicated video memory
Its more than what I need and will run you about $1,400. Its light and has a 15.4" high definition screen. DVD player, all the installed Microsoft software.
I'd say go for it. I hadn't had many problems with Compaq/HP. They have good customer service too.
I cant tell you much about Macs... but if you decided to go PC - which is more compatible with a lot of todays software, especially games, I could tell you about that.
If you go PC, dont get a Pentium processer, the Pentium 4 processes at 32 bits while the Athlon 64 proess at 64 bits.
If you plan on watching a lot movies, then be sure to get dedicated video memory.
Faster speeds, like the features on this laptop, will be more expensive, and value drops like a car... but will be compatible for a long time.
Im not really a computer expert, but I can say that I've heard that Macs are better for imaging and music, but suck for internet and gaming... and arent as compatible with modern technology.
