It's message sending time for the NBA. This is a major black eye for a league that's going to get a lot of negative attention in the mold of the NHL's Bertuzzi/Moore assault. This was a flat disgrace and the punishments should be swift and severe.
I'm hoping to hear about some arrests soon. No way that the players and fans who incited and participated in this riot should just walk away from it.
Clockwork, best post of this thread. I don't see how Artest, O'Neal, and Jackson don't get suspended for at least the rest of the year. This was the worst brawl I have ever seen in pro sports.
One thing evidenced by this is the stupidity of Tim Legler of ESPN. Right after it happened up to now he is defending Artest and the Pacers, some BS about 'defending themselves'. Sorry, doesn't work that way. Some slob in the 12th row throws a beer, he should be shown the door. You can arrest him, you can ban him from the arena for life. I have no problem with that. But the people in this thread who feel that the Pacers foray into the stands for a beatdown is justified couldn't be more wrong. If some guy on the street calls me an SOB, I don't have the right to hit him over the head with a chair. This isn't the WWE. And this concept of 'street cred' doesn't fly in our legal system. I would have to think the Detroit DA will file assault/battery charges against all the Pacers that went in the stands, and I would pretty much guarantee lawsuits against the Pacer players by the guys who took the beat downs.
If Artest's wife is in the stands getting beat up (or his kids, or his grandma) - he has a right to wade in and protect his loved ones. If the fans throw beer - he needs to walk away.
Many Pacers will be several million dollars poorer after this is done.
