2 layers of Asphalt shingles?.. They won't let you put more than 2 layers on here. Unless your bottom layer is Cedar Shakes, then that counts as plywood and you can put 2 layers of asphalt on top of that.
but you can only put 2 layers over plywood.
I moved out of my old house because it was going to be a Cedar Shake Tear off, and the roof was steep as hell 12/6 or so. I didnt feel like doing it. Tear it down to the rafters and put in 5/8
plywood to meet code (because the house was so old the rafters were on 2 ft. centers all on a 12/6 roof.. forget that...... "Honey we're moving"
I patched the old roof up with matching shingles and the home inspector gave it a thumbs up.
