Pffffffft....forget you then. REAL students are music majors.
OK, here comes a long post.
Was in the stadium about an hour before the game. My friend decided that he wanted to have a clear view of the game instead of being in the heart of the student section (damn him), so we were in the front row on the 20 yard line. I prefer around the 10 (more action with fans), but whatever. The places was laid back. Too laid back. I kept thinking "Baylor" throughout warmups.
Second point, they need to burn the white pants. Those bastards are cursed. I firmly believe this.
Game starts and the offense looks like crap. I know Klatt said that things felt good even though they went three and out, but he's B.S.'ing and everyone knows it. Unfortunatley, the defense was a little too cocky, and two plays later, we're losing to a color. That's right, Green 7, Buffaloes 0. I believe the guy behind me summed it up best when he said, "Do they make you go down to 1-AA if you lose to a color?" I'm still not convinced that the onside kick went the ten yards on the next kickoff, but UNT got the ball back. This was the first turning point for the team and fans. It got both pretty fired up. We stopped them, tied the game up at 7 as the offense removed it's heads from it's posteriors.
UNT took the lead again, we tied it again. Then the ultimate turning point. UNT was 5 yards from going up 21-14 when Lorenzo Sims had a BEAUTIFUL hit, forcing a fumble. 95 yards later, CU is up 21-14 and it was all over.
Klatt and the offense clicked, but don't think that this solved our offensive problems. UNT was poor on defense, and we ran the bootleg pass to Vickers/Klopfenstein/Sypniewski constantly. It was like watching Kansas City's defense. We will NOT be able to get away with that against Mizzou. Klatt had all day in the pocket as well. One of his touchdown passes, he had a good 5-7 seconds back there before he threw a beautiful pass to (I believe) Judge in the end zone. One nice thing about the game is we got the ball to a LOT of players. According to the box score, 11 players caught a pass and 7 players had rushing attempts (not counting QB's). Especially nice was seeing true frosh Hugh Charles and Byron Ellis get some PT at HB. Neither of them looked great, but give them time. Charles is gonna be a GREAT change of pace back for us, if not this year, then next.
Defense was a little un-nerving. They came out too cocky, and it was obvious. Kind of nice to see them get knocked down a peg and have it not hurt us. LB's overpursued and it cost us a lot. That said, I still love our LB's. Dawn is the HEART of the defense, he's gonna be a team captain next year IMO. He's always running around getting people pumped up and is always coming over to the student section to get us louder. I was surprised Iwuh played because when I saw him walking around campus earlier this week, he had a noticable limp. More surprising to me though was the fact that Terrance Wheatley isn't our starting CB anymore. Still got lots of PT, but it appears that both Sims and Burl have passed him on the depth chart. IMO, he's our best cover corner, but he is a little weak in the run D. Should be interesting to see how that plays out.
Best part of the game for the D though? OUR CORNERBACKS DIDN'T PLAY GREG ROBINSON COVERAGE! The first two games, Burl, Sims and Wheatley would all line up 10 yards from the reciever, even on 2nd and 2. This game, I saw numerous times where we were right on the line of scrimmage, even doing some bump and runs. AGGRESSIVE D! Gotta love it.
Purify did go down with an injury in the 3rd, and thanks to this, I missed about 3 possessions of the game. Because of where we were seated, I was about 15 feet from where the trainers were checking him out. It was a shoulder injury and they put ice on it for a while. Apparently it was better quickly though because in the fourth, he had the ice off and was joking with the student's section (including three girls who were all over him and almost had to be held back by security). I overheard him saying that he was fine and that he'd be ok by Mizzou. Sounds like if he would have been needed, he could have gone back in to the game, but it's still a little unnerving seeing your offense on the sideline like that.
Depsite Purify's women though, the biggest fan favorite on the team is the damn kicker. Numerous times during the game, you would hear chants of "CROSBY" going up. One guy (dressed in a very stylish 70s leisure suit I might add) even had a "CROSBY FOR HEISMAN" sign. Kid has a hell of a leg though. Only one kickoff was returned. The rest, except for one, cleared the endzone completely. Now if we can work on the accuracy.......
Finally, I just have to say this -- GIVE US THE MARSHMALLOWS BACK! Halftime came and it was just sad. You saw students looking around in despiration. Finally, dejected, most of us just sat with our heads in our hands. We just look lost now.
