I've owend a couple and have always been impressed by them. I've also heard Sony is making some decent head units these days, but I tend to shy away from Sony because of their poor track record with power supplies.

Whatever you buy, keep an eye on signal-to-noise ratios (snr) and total harmonic distortion (thd). You want the highest SNR you can get with the lowest THD. Also, I'd sacrifice a bit on the head unit to get good speakers. Good speakers make a bad stereo better and a good stereo great. Bad speakers make all stereos sound like crap!
