I dunno. Fox sure, RWradio sure .... But I've wondered what made the rest of the media run with this ... which was known and discredited years ago. ONeill should be locked up for stalking Kerry. His ties and who pays him has been known for decades. The media generally sticks with what sells its customers products, which was why the WJC sex stuff took a long time to get traction. But elections are wierd. Campaigns put out stories to the media. Each day, the campaigns have the candidates on an issue and que in the media ahead of time. Given where the money for these guys comes from, it's pretty obvious Rove had his little fax sheets and emails set to go weeks/months ago. He prolly has dozens of scripts ... on terror, iraq, oil, etc
But what WJC was noted for was that he anticipated the attacks and had stuff ready to go out within hours. He'd get his counter out, and just blow by the smear with whatever message he had. Why it took Kerry days to get his mates up on local tv talk shows saying it was a lie/smear .... dunno. But Kerry wasn't ready for the sudden flareup.
What seems to happen in electiosn is once a story gets up there, and it can be innane stuff like this ... like Poppy not knowing about Uscan in grocery stores or pumping gas ... it lingers to a slow death, or until some other story gets out there.
Bush had run seferal "flip flop" ads before the convention, but everytime he did a campaign, something like the prison abuse or Chalabi being an Iranian tool, or 9-11 commission saying the intell didn't point to Iraq, would deflate the attack. I think what happened here was that esp with the Olympics taking up air time, the tvs and radios had only so much alloted to this stuff, and the Sadr thing seems to be dragging out, so it wasn't such a "new" newstory, and with the various Peterson trial bs still neeeding to be covered ..... BushII had a good week. What dole said .... frankly I think he's losing his ability to be rational. He's still pissed Kerry protested. And, honestly the protest bothers a lot of people. And, like you noted, those are people who don't want to look at the substance of what Kerry said, which was pretty much the dead on truth.
Now it looks like the prison abuse stuff is back.
But, no ... the media isn't on its own going to go out and pull the name of the Conn or Tex guy who took BushII's spot, nor Cheney's. I guess Kerry should have just had "bush is gay" or something story ready. I'm sort of with Falconer on this. Both Kerry and BushII have what they think is policy to make life better, and honestly they aren't really that far apart, though Bush is a lot more RW than he promised 4 years ago. It's power.
