This test is from rural Kentucky. It was probably the peak of their education before they went to work the fields. I doubt the population of Kentucky in 1912 was smarter than the US population today, but it shows how much easier it was for Kentucky to get their kids ready for the real world at an earlier age. I do think it's wasteful and it takes longer to push kids through the federal "one size fits all" educational system.
