It's really kind of a strange thing when people assign so much credibility to a work of fiction. I'm not saying it's not important. There are important concepts represented in there, and in Orwell's life and beliefs. But those principles should be able to stand on their own, and be defended on their own account.
Orwell didn't make privacy and individuality important. He simply saw that it was and painted a picture of it. He saw what many of us see. I think at the end of the day, works like 1984 get the status they do because allegory and parable is easier than philosophy.
