Thought about downloading it for a read, I doubt I really processed a lot of it back then. Most of us probably know more about it from cultural reference than from the text itself or its author.
I read it my first year of college, and have read it at least once a year since. Forgive me if blindly quoting things without realizing their intent grates on my last nerve.
As I said in another post, people are always quick with the Big Brother references, and it's cute, really. But 1984 wasn't about oppressive government so much as it was about the sheep-like populace who allow it to happen. It was also about social hierarchy and class warfare.
But hey, these people on the internet will think I'm awesome if I can take this one quote out of context and apply it to my agenda, even though my agenda goes against pretty much everything the author of that quote stood for.
