I would also wager, Dr. Broncenstein, that if you ever had actually experienced true need, you wouldn't be so cavalier with your claim that people "choose" a life of dependence. I personally know several people who are receiving federal or state assistance. Not one of them chose how they got their. Neither did their kids. I wonder also if it would surprise you (or most conservatives) to know that they are absolutely ashamed of the fact that they're receiving assistance.
My experience with those on welfare, which is extensive, is that they neither want to be there, nor did they choose to get there.
