I lost 18 pounds of pure fat for vanity reasons in four months last year (mind you I was only at 18% body fat when I started) and got my resting heart rate down to 42 bpm. I'm 28. It can be done fellas. It helps that I live in NY where food quality is higher (as opposed to chains where larger portions, creams and frying are used to make **** food more appealing), eat a predominantly Asian diet and rarely touch the sweet stuff. If you've got the mental ability to go a little nuts during workouts then try HIIT
(edit: in contrast to that article i prefer a 5 minute warm up with 30 seconds on and one minute off for 15 minutes - that should be enough to kick your ass)
