Deer antler powder is known to contain trace amounts of IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1), it is a protein that is natural to the human body, has a structure similar to that of insulin and promotes cell growth and cell proliferation while inhibiting cell death. It acts very similarly to anabolic steroids and is an important hormone during childhood growth.

It is not the deer antler powder itself that is the issue, most of that is calcium carbonate and other salts that do nothing at all - the presence of IGF-1 is however an issue. It all comes down to how much he took and how much IGF-1 was present in the sample.
