Don't ever understand that. Kicking the extra point ensures that you are still on the short end of the scoreboard. I don't care what quarter, or how early in the game it is. If you are down by 2 after a touchdown, you go for 2, to try to tie up the scoreboard.
So if you miss the 2-pointer, you're down by 2. Opponent scores a TD in the 4th quarter, now you're down by 9, meaning 2 scores. Whereas you could've been down by only 8 and 1 score had you just kicked the XP earlier.
