It's in the name, folks. Particularly if he's the only name on the ballot.
I remember years ago two Democrats were surprise winners in a Chicago primary election. The two, with almost no money and no support from the party aparatus, were disciples of nutjob Lyndon LaRouche. The two candidates were named "Hart" and "Fairchild".
But my favorite story of this type was in Houston about a dozen years ago when an unknown won the job as County Chairperson for the Democrat Party. She won, in part, because she had an Hispanic name that was similar to another popular local politician, defeating the hand-picked party choice.
The story got even better when it turned out that the woman was not Hispanic but white, that she also used to be a man and that, while a man, she had a prison record. I figured this made her the perfect symbol for her party - someone who could appeal to a multitude of minority groups the Democrats always claim to speak for but, alas, the Democrats saw it differently. Since they couldn't overturn the results, they met and stripped her office of any power or responsibility until she was voted out the next time. ROFL2
