Had Gene been alive in 1912 he would have saved the ship using a sock, a page from the ships log, a diving suit, duct tape (man always had duct tape right?), and the command modules CO2 scubbers.
This would have sealed the gash in the hull and purified any water that had entered the ship so it could be used as drinking water for the 3rd class passengers.
