Guys that are in typical bands like Eddie and David Gilmour , and then guys like Vie and Satriani who are more just solo acts and don't write in typical song format ... They are more like listening to a orchestra then a band.
I'm down with the two-criteria ranking, but I'm thinking Eddie might be more like a Vai/Satriani soloist, especially with VH's revolving door of singers. He's an amazing technician, but I think the flashy brilliance that attracts us to these guys is out of proportion to its musical relevance. How often do these wild, flailing solos "make" a great song? You can only listen to Eruption so many times before you want to move on to the real songs.
