Don't know your style/expectations. I ponied up the cash for a 15.4" MacBook Pro (2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, 8x SuperDrive), and I love it... but kind of a hipster like that and I'm a music nerd and I do a lot of graphic editing.
For PCs I understand you can get a decent HP w/Office (are can surf the internet well) for like $500.
