To use a closer comparison, I would say that Robin Trower, who is a British blues/rock guitarist of Clapton's generation, can play Clapton under the table but hasn't received anything close to the same recognition or acclaim.
Clapton is a paradigm example of the inverse relationship between celebrity and talent that so often exists in the music business. It's not that he sucks - it's just that there are so many more accomplished players who don't get nearly as much recognition.
