Sure, grab a 1979 CBX if you can. Only the 1979 has the max HP.
The 1979 engine is the one to grab. After that it was detuned, the HP was decreased. The valve timing was detuned to decrease the HP for European sales, oddly.
If it has a fairing, it's not a 1979. That's what you have to look for, the valve train, only the 1979 engine had the max HP, and only the 1979 had no fairing.
To my knowledge, every CBX that had a fairing was detuned. Only the 1979 had max HP.

1979 CBX was the exact one I was looking for due to the reason you detailed. People say the later ones that were detuned were a better ride...but give me the max HP of the earlier model. Really heavy bike...but a definite classic.
Saw a perfect 1979 CBX in the Barber Museum in Birmingham AL (awesome place if you haven't been) last year during a dinner benefit with Cook Neilsen and his 1977 Daytona Superbike winner Deja Blue.
Hope to get some track time on Barber this year. The track and Museum are as good as it gets for motorsports anywhere in the World. Any bike you can name from any era is there in pristine condition. This is motoheaven.
