HERM’S STAFF BEGINS TO SCATTER

With Chiefs coach Herm Edwards continuing to slowly twist in the wind, three members of his staff have left for other jobs.
The most recently potentially former assistant is defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham. He’s scheduled to explore taking the same position in Detroit, where he would be reunited with former Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.
Cunningham spent three seasons in Tennessee as the meat portion of the sandwich made up of two stints with the Chiefs. The first time around, Cunningham was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach and then returned in 2004 as defensive coordinator during Dick Vermeil’s tenure.
Previously, secondary coach David Gibbs left for the Texans, and special teams coach Mike Priefer jumped to Denver.
If Edwards stays, the challenge will be to fill those spots with assistants who surely will fear that they might be out of work after only one season.
Meanwhile, we’ve heard that Edwards could land in Indianapolis as defensive coordinator if he’s fired by the Chiefs. Others think that he’d be happy to work as a position coach, primarily since he never has worked as a defensive coordinator.
