DENVER (AP) -Marek Svatos scored 2:05 into overtime, helping the Colorado Avalanche snap a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday night.
Svatos gathered a loose puck in front of the net and backhanded a shot past Rick DiPietro.
DiPietro, wearing his new bright-white pads, turned aside 37 shots, including numerous point-blank opportunities by Colorado early in the game.
Jose Theodore finished with 23 saves.
New York couldn't take advantage of a high-sticking penalty on Ian Laperriere late in the third period that carried over into the opening minute of overtime.
Jordan Leopold tied it at 1 after sneaking a shot past DiPietro with 31.6 seconds remaining in the second period. It was Leopold's third goal of the season.
Tim Jackman scored his first early in the opening period when he got to a loose puck and beat Theodore with a shot over the right shoulder.
