The Chiefs' Tony Gonzalez told FOXSports.com that he is very close to a five-year extension to remain in Kansas City rather than hit the free agent market. The deal includes a stunning $17 million in guaranteed bonus money and averages more than $6.25 million per year — huge numbers for a tight end — with $18 million over the first three years

Hey smart guy, look at the part of the article you just posted. "With $18 million over the first three years." That is heavily front loaded. You know what that means? He will get most of his money in the first 3 years of his contract when he should still be playing at the same level. We can cut him after those three years with not much of a cap hit.

I hate to dissapoint you but this signing is not going to break the bank or put us in cap hell. It is a very manageable contract that can easily be voided after three years with minimal cap hit.

The Chiefs have a good amount of cap room this year and are only going to have more by the time free agency will start. Carl Peterson has said he will approach Trent Green about reworking his contract. Priest Holmes is likely to retire, freeing up more money. Will Shields could possibly retire, freeing up more money. The Chiefs are sure to cut or trade some of the high priced players who are not producing including Eric Hicks, Greg Wesley, Ryan Sims, Kendrell Bell, Dante Hall, etc.. Most of those guys are making well over a million. By cutting most of those guys we can get younger and save alot of cap room at the same time. None of them are important pieces on this team.

Again, sorry to dissapoint you Broncos fans. But this move did not break the bank and we have the money to spend in free agency.
