I've cruised OF1 up that hill a few times myself without incident but years ago my friends dad was hauling a 1954 Cadillac Eldorado Baritz fully restored in an enclosed trailer! We were heading up the pass when all of a sudden we heard a big WAM!!! and the truck jerked to the point where it felt like the front wheels were going to do a wheelie.
We pulled over when the road flattened out and the caddilac hat hit the rear of the trailer. You see my friend forgot to strap the car down. His dad almost reached back and decked him there on the spot but somehow he remained calm. There was minor damage but thank the powers that be that we didn't lose the car out the back of the trailer. At that time the car was valued at well over 100k. This was probably 12 years ago.
Anyhow that's my Raton pass story. I always enjoy seeing the Welcome To Coloroful Colorado Sign at the top of that.
well noone was hurt ............. I love the welcome to Wyoming signs
