The manager of my All Time team isn't in the Hall of Fame. He only won one World Series. Several poor finishes at the end of his career left him with a lifetime record under .500.

He was also the only manager to ever handle Dick Allen. He was the man who turned Goose Gossage into a closer. He guided his team back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series. He won everywhere he had talent and he had a happy clubhouse everywhere he went. He did it all with class and dignity and total respect from his players, opponents and peers. He might be the only guy who could massage all the incredible talent and monstrous egos on one of these all time rosters.

Manager Chuck Tanner White Sox/A's/Pirates/Braves

Charles William Tanner

Born July 4, 1929 in New Castle, PA

  • Chuck got his break in 1970, after eight years of managing in the minors. He went 3-13 as the interim manager on a terrible White Sox team that finished 56-106, dead last in the AL West with the worst record in baseball.

  • The following season, thanks to Tanner's eternal optimism and enthusiasm, the White Sox' record improved to 79-83. The 23 victory increase helped Chicago finish third in a competitive division.

  • Tanner spent one season in Oakland, until owner Charlie Finley traded him to Pittsburgh for popular catcher Manny Sanguillen and $100,000.

  • Tanner was the manager of the "We Are Family" Pirates team that overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat Baltimore in the 1979 World Series.

  • His teams usually led the league in stolen bases and played aggressive team oriented baseball that involved everybody on the roster.
