Hard to believe Speaker slipped this far. He would have been a solid pick about a dozen rounds ago. He was overshadowed by Ty Cobb during his playing days and he remains one of the most underrated superstars in baseball history.
- First all time with 792 doubles. He led the league in doubles a record eight times.
- Fifth all time with 3514 hits. He led the league in hits twice and had more than 200 hits four times.
- Sixth all time with 222 triples. 13 seasons with more than 10 triples.
- Sixth all time with a lifetime .345 batting average.
- Batted over .300 18 times and over .380 five times.
- Won the AL batting title in 1916 with an average of .386 and finished second or third in batting nine times.
- 11th all time with 1882 runs scored.
- Lifetime one base percentage of .428 is 12th all time.
- One of the best defensive centerfielders in history, he played extremely shallow to rob basehits. Speaker is the all time ML leader in outfield assists (448) and double plays (139), as well as the AL leader in outfield putouts (6,706).
"If you put a baseball and other toys in front of a baby,
he'll pick up a baseball in preference to the others."
