MAN KILLED BY 23,000 SPLIFFS

`First Brit' to die of dope poisoning

By Richard Smith

A YOUNG man has died from cannabis poisoning after smoking around 23,000 joints.

Experts believe Lee Maisey, 36, is the first Briton to die as a direct result of taking the drug.

Cannabis will be downgraded from a class B to a class C illegal drug by the Government on January 29. The move meansmost small-scale users will be let off with a warning.

Leesmoked around six joints aday for 11 years, aninquest heard. A pal found him dead last August on the living room floor of the house they shared.

Lee had complained of a headache the day before. But coroner Michael Howells said hewas free from disease.

The cause of Lee's death was listed as ''cannabis toxicity'' after a post mortem revealed high levels in his blood. The inquest recorded a verdict of death by misadventure because of his illegal drug use.

Experts warned after the case in Pembroke, Wales that cannabis can be much more powerful than users think.

Dr Philip Guy, an addictions expert at Hull University, said yesterday: ''Cannabis is not the nice hippy drug it used to be. It is a lot stronger nowadays.''

Dr Guy added that people who ate the drug rather than smoked it were more at risk.

''If you eat a large amount of cannabis it can be deadly, '' he said. ''I would not be surprised if in this case the deceased had ingested a fatal amount.''

Cannabis has been linked to suicides and fatal accidents. But Lee's case is the first where it has been listed as a direct cause of death.

The Government has always insisted that cannabis is harmful and should not be used.

But Home Secretary David Blunkett says he is downgrading it to class C to help police focus on more dangerous drugs like heroin and crack cocaine.

Blunkett said this week: ''I want to get people off trying cannabis, but I want the education message to be clear: Don't pretend cannabis and crack are the same. They are not.''

Good god, smoke a joint and go to bed man!

That 6 a day crap is for teenagers and should not last more than say a year or two.

alkemical 01-22-2004 12:30 PM

this is just a funny as hell story!

RunByDesign 01-22-2004 01:21 PM

That's a huge spliff!

Meck77 01-22-2004 06:22 PM

Geez it only took 23,000 joints to kill the guy. Hell 23,000 cheeseburgers would have killed him much faster.

Rock Chalk 01-22-2004 06:32 PM

This is not funny Josh. The American media gets a whiff of this, or worse yet the government and that will set back any and all progress made in legalizing weed even for medical purposes in the last 20 years.

The ironic thing about that is this will be led by the very people you supported Alec.

See there you go again assuming I agree with everything the republicans do. :pity:

Smoking weed and the GOP do not mix....you don't have to agree with them 100% on everything, but by supporting them, you're indirectly endorseing 100% of their agenda whether you agree with them or not.

Rock Chalk 01-22-2004 08:09 PM

Whatever Hogan. Im sure you dont 100% agree with everything the libertarians say either.

The only person I 100% agree with on anything is me.

So by your logic I should only endorse myself as President.

Pezman 01-22-2004 09:49 PM

ALEC RAENOS FOR SECRETARY OF THE BUDZ~

Hmm, it does have a ring to it. If this guy laced his doob with red-hair hash or something, I can see how it killed him. But it sounds to me like he porbably had other health issues to begin with.

Seriously the THC content would have to be extrodinary to kill someone.

I wonder if they rolled the guy up and smoked him at the funeral... Talk about a contact high LMAO

No I do not, but the things I disagree with them on they wouldn't inprison me for either....If you get caught with the herb...all the others matters won't make a difference...you're getting arrested reguardless.

Rock Chalk 01-23-2004 02:45 PM

Are you sure about that Hogan? You mean to say if the Libertarians made something into law and you didnt agree with it and you broke that law they would not put you into prison for it?

Well, so Libertarians have a law against murder. But say, for example, you do not agree with it. If you broke that law, you are saying they would not imprison you for that infraction?

I didnt make the law. I dont know who did, I dont care. It IS the law and if I break the law and get caught I deserve the punishment handed down.

Would I like to change the law? Yes. But I dont see how I can. Even dems who are for the legalization of weed cant change the law. I dont see how libertarians could either.

Libertarians are largely for the legalization of weed.

AS is the Repuiblican Governor of Arizona. I am pretty sure he endorsed not just medical marijuana, but also decriminalizing minor possession to nothing or like a traffic ticket type of offense. I heard him on TV a couple years ago, so he might be out of office now.

Rock Chalk 01-23-2004 08:01 PM

You completely avoided the main point of that post RHogan. Sneaky bastard.

I got news for you guys - More people were thrown in jail for Pot during the Clinton adminstration than at any other time in the history of the United States. Politicians don't like weed... period.

Republicans hate it because... well they hate any drug that's not manufactured by the major drug companies.

Democrats hate it because not hating it makes them look soft on drugs.

Either way...we will all be long dead before you can legally smoke a doob in your own back yard.

I have a friend in Amsterdam who takes care of me and I'll tell you this much.
Life is good over there if you like to spark up every now and then.

I don't buy it. He was smoking about two ounces a week depending on the size of the j's. Unless he smoked six of these baseball bats a day I can't see two ounces a week killing you.

alkemical 01-27-2004 10:43 AM

Sideburn,

as a person who studies the drugs i consume, the half-life on THC can build up and cause some issues - besides if he would have stuck to bongs the tar reduction rate would have alone helped him, at least until his lungs collapsed

Rohirrim 01-28-2004 07:19 PM

I almost died from smoking pot. One night, me and a buddy climbed up on a railroad trestle and smoked an ounce bag between us. It took a while. We noticed a light coming down the tracks and thought it was some kind of night watchman with a lantern. Once we realized it was a train, we didn't have much time to clear the tracks. BARELY made it with the engineer blasting his horn at us. What a rush!

RunByDesign 01-28-2004 09:49 PM

I apologize in advance but, that is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard.
