OT: Samuel update

I meant to get this up during the bye week, but it just didn't happen. Sam had an awesome summer. We took bike rides which he loves (thanks to all of you here), and we went to a small carnival and he loves riding the Tilt-a-Whirl.

Unfortunately our fall has not been as good. I noticed that one of Sam's legs was about an inch longer than the other. After taking him to Children's it was determined that the shorter leg was a result of his hip coming out of its socket. The other hip was doing the same thing as well, so it was determined that he had to have surgery. They released soft tissue on both of the hips, and on the left one they had to cut the femur and insert two steel plates to get it to go into the socket at a better angle.

He seems to be getting over the surgery now. It has been just a little over two weeks now. Those first three days without even a smile were gut wrenching. The problem is that he cannot eat without vomiting it all back up. It is to the point that he no longer eats anything by mouth and is strickly being tube fed. Even then he is still throwing it all back up. This is the most worried I have been about him in a very long time.

The doctors did not expect Sam to live past two, and here he is now four years old. He is a strong little boy who only knows joy. Please pray for him to get past this latest obstacle.

broncosteven 10-18-2007 10:31 AM

I will keep him close in my thoughts.

Hang in there!

PatsWin2002 10-18-2007 10:33 AM

Oh man....poor little dude. Damn, he had that same inability to keep food down when he was a baby.

Hopefully he will overcome that soon and get things back to normal at home.

Thinking of Sam and your family, Falconer.

Wow, Poor little guy. I only pray he gets better. You and your family are in my prayers always. Do the Doctors even have a clue? Is it a reaction to the anesthesia?

crush17 10-18-2007 11:07 AM

my thoughts and prayers will continue to go out to Sam and your family.

We have an appointment with his doctor, but she will probably just send us to a GI doctor. The short answer will be he will probably find nothing either. Like PatsWin said earlier, he went through this once before when he was just a baby. They couldn't find a thing physically wrong with him. They just attributed to his brain damage. It was only after we were told that we should not expect him to live much longer when he started getting better. I attribute that to the fact it was at that time when we stopped relying on doctors and put all of our faith in God. Maybe we are getting to that point again.

I am sure that the anesthesia did not help, as Sam has a hard time with that. However, he had started throwing up some before he had the surgery. Now it is every time he eats though. We get so worried sitting there beside him trying to hold him upright so he won't throw it back up. He does it anyway and you just want to cry. He then looks up at you with his big blue eyes and gives you the biggest grin; like to say don't worry about me dad I have it covered.
