Tiny terrier saved kids from pit bulls

http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapc...rss_topstories

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A plucky Jack Russell terrier named George saved five children from two marauding pit bulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight that it had to be put down, its owner said Wednesday.

George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pit bulls appeared and lunged toward them, Allan Gay said.

"George was brave -- he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.

"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."

One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pit bulls to keep them off his 4-year-old brother, Darryl.

"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him -- one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."

But George was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said.

South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two pit bulls had been impounded, and likely would be put down because of the attack.

In New Zealand, owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed.

That's crazy...a JRT versus two pits? Heroic dog.

We've had a rash of the pit bull attacks in Dallas for several years now. We just had another one about 3 weeks ago where some 9 year old kid was killed by the family pit in his backyard. Witnesses say the kid did nothing to provoke the attack and the dog was not abused or trained to fight or any of that. Personally I wouldn't want one around my kids no matter how nice the thing appeared. If another dog bites your kid you get him a shot. One of these things goes off the reservation and you could be holding a funeral. A few years ago I was walking my Golden Retreiver a few blocks from here and had one come after me. I had to smack him about 8 times in the head with a steel pipe to get him to back off.

There's no place in urban or populated areas for them other than guarding property, etc..

But he's such a nice doggie!

I'm tired of this crap and the apologists.

wow. thats not a contrived story or anything.
no anti pit slant there (HUGE sarcasm DRIPPING from my mouth).

its so pathetically anti pit its almost comical.

a little terrier (which of course is MUCH more likely to bite a human) saved the kids from the pits.
two pits WANTED to attack the kids, but this little dog somehow prevented that.
yeah freaking right.

the little dog (some of those little terriers can be VERY aggressive with humans and dogs and a pitbull by nature IS aggressive towards other dogs) picked a fight he couldnt win, and of course the pits (assuming they were pits) never touched the kids. what a surprise.

you know what, this doesnt even dignify a response.
its bad reporting. no one knows those dogs intentions, and to ASSume they were gonna hurt the kids is a huge (and unfair) leap.
if they wanted to hurt the kids, they wouldve.
done with this bull**** non story.

watermock 05-02-2007 01:25 PM

You want to fly in the face of reality regarding pit bulls go ahead.

I hear this crap how wonderfull and loving they are...where was the owner"?

people don't have a clue that dogs will behave very differently when the owner isn't around.

i think all dogs are a product of socialization and the owners. that being said how come you never hear about dobermen or rottweiler attacks? or mutts that attack?

Yeah we should take your word for it over the kids who were there.

Your the one pathetic...the terrier died protecting two kida. from two loose pit bulls.

The story is what it is. Noone "anti pit made it up. When you give me a different story, then STFU.

If you can't imagine a pitbull attacking because you have two, I would like to heve the the bird and then run. You don't know crap about their behavior when your not around.

They attack other dogs and humans too but they rarely take their attacks all the way to the death of the other animal or human.

how would you possibly know that?
it just will not grab the headlines like "rabid pit kills"

watermock 05-02-2007 01:48 PM

You can't make even a pathetic argument.

BTW, I didn't start the thread dimwit.

If the members of your community had a clue you were a remorseless cat rapist, they would surely ostracize more than they do already.

1. trying to argue a point with someone who has made up their mind already is pointless

2. i was not refering to this thread, but ALL the other threads you start when some random thought occurs to you.

Yea little george sure looks like a killer. Even if George is "Much more likely to bite a human" his bites aren't going to kill anyone.

Canmore 05-02-2007 01:56 PM

Pit bulls were bred to fight. Why do you think Michael Vick had 66 of them. It wasn't because they are a "nice" doggie. If you want a reliable guard dog get a German Shepard or a Malinois.

the whole thing, but whatever. im too tired and too angry.

"two marauding pits." there's no slant there right?
no bias?

gimme a break. its a fvkking 11 year olds IDEA of what happened and a writers anti pit spin.
you think this little damn terrier is gonna keep two "marauding" pits away from a luscious 4 year old prey? uh huh. okay.

its bull**** through and through, and it just further perpetuates the lies already being spread about the breed.

further, if we STOP fvkkkers like vick from breeding these dogs, then we'll only be left with loving owners, and of course EVERY neutral source agrees that the breed is NOT by nature violent, so all these stories (many arent stories, some are) stop.

what happens if vicks 66 dogs had gotten out?
then pitbulls would be called "marauders" because THOSE pits have the potential to get confused and attack, when in reality ANY breed abused and starved and bred for fighting would be unpredictable.

again, why didnt we hear about pits in the 60's, 70's, 80's, and much of the 90's?
because then it was dobermans or rottys that took the bad rap. THOSE were the dogs that a$$holes bought so they could put a studded collar on 'em and try to make themselves feel tough. now its pits, and it fvkkking pisses me off considering the breed is by nature smart, loving, and EXTREMELY docile.

make sense?
