The verdict is in (at least for me)!

Of the many years I've stomped around the US I've always tried to note things I liked about certain states, and things I hated about certain states.

I've come to the conclusion that California drivers are the biggest jerks on the planet. I say planet, because I doubt their complete disregard for road rules can be surpassed.
Prior to my last road trip I had the NJ/NY drivers rated as the biggest A$$holes.

California is nuts. In their defense though there are tens of millions of them crammed into the same spot. How could they not be a little crazy on the road?

What's weidr up my way is people don't even use horns. I guess people think it's offensive or something. I lay on mine occasionally when a tourist is doing something dumb. It's funny to see the looks from people on the sidewalks and other cars. It's almost a look of shock....lmao

I guess it's the "rudeness factor" which puts them over the top. The state could save untold millions by eliminating all "yield" and "speed limit" signs.
Nobody pays any attention to either of them.

My auto insurance went down when I moved from Colorado to California.

No snow and ice. And there is a place that has California beat hands down, not even close. Italy has THE worst drivers in the world. You don't even want to know what kind of stress it is to drive there. They literally don't use turn signals, when they turn they just do and beep their horn as they go. Its insane watching this in a busy city.

Traffic lights are generally only seen as suggestions and itīs common to park your car on the road with flashing warning lights. It is pretty bad, yes, and I usually feel very uneasy there, at least in the cities. Torino and Genova are nightmares ... thank god Iīve never driven in the Southern Italian cities like Napoli or Palermo .... the secret to driving there without suffering a heart attack is to just go and donīt stop ... if you stop, you lose. And we havenīt even talked about the Vespas yet ...

Italy is the worst I have driven in or seen, but I am not sure whether itīs the worst in the world. Turkey and some other Asian countries are pretty chaotic also.

theAPAOps5 04-10-2007 03:16 AM

Ah yes the Vespas are the worst because they sneak attack your ass. You are getting ready to turn and they come flying up between lanes like they are immune to any semblance of laws. I was in Pisa and it was insane basically the more aggressive you are the better your chances of moving. Turkey has to be up ther but so does Egypt. Egyptians are insane in their driving its like they just aim for their destination and hope for the best.

Yep, thatīs the main logic ... turn off your brain and never stop as nobody else will and stopping will only provoke an accident. Pisa was pretty harmless IMO ... Torino almost had me screaming and I was only in the backseat.

Egypt is another country where the horn is basically a brake replacement.

You have to realize that Californians approach speed limits with a 'law of average' mentality. So much of the time your time is spent standing still on a 6 lane fwy that when things open up the adjusted speed limit is 120 :~ohyah!:

A piece of advice to those not use to driving in Cali.... For whatever reason, turn signals are a sign of weakness. Drivers can all be perfectly spaced in smooth flowing light traffic... try putting your signal on and just watch as multiple cars seem to cross four lanes to cut you off. I never got use to that or understood it. Just one of those things.....

Recently I helped set up the wifes parents in their retirement home in New Mexico south of Sante Fe. The Realestate is so strong in regards to investment (even now when everything else is slow) I decided to buy a house here myself.

But talk about your crazy Drivers. Never seen so many Drunks on the Road!!!! I challenge anyone to find a place with more Drunks per Driver average than in New Mexico. I feel safer in L.A or Orange County in 6 lanes of packed traffic than I do here out in the sticks with maybe 4 other drivers at a time....Why? because chances are 2 out of the 4 of those other NM drivers are probably so drunk they couldn't stand if their life depended on it but they're cruising down the road all over the place!!!!!!!! It's a very leal and serious problem here.

It's not a matter of speed or speed limits. I don't mind going 100. I drove in Germany for a few years and LA and SoCal don't even come close to the speeds on the Autobahn. It's a matter of the "dumbass factor" and rudeness of the SoCal drivers.
Maybe they just didn't like my Bronco Country license plates. 8') or the fact that I was vacationing (chillin') while they had to carry their sorry asses to work.

The roads in Germany are battle zones, albeit disciplined ones compared to Italy, and the speeds here can be really, really dangerous .... especially the huge speed difference you sometimes have between the fast and the slow lane.

I'll take the roads (drivers) in Germany over the roads (drivers) in CA any day, unless the driving habits in Germany have changed drastically in the past 5 yrs.

RE: the fast lanes. If your car can't keep up, stay out of the fast lane. At least there the fast lane IS the left lane. It's clear!
In CA, the fast lane changes every ten seconds.

Been to DC and it doesn't compare (IMO) to the nuts in California. The NE states used to rank at the top for me until this past week.

Always take your Bronco stuff off before getting your car detailed out in SoCal. Trust me on this one! Car washes and illegal-car washer-Faider fans don't mix!

Also, in SoCal everyone is over-touchy and Road Rage can be severe. In New York using your horn is a god given mandate used more than a turn signal. Out here in on the West Coast people react to a horn as if you shot at them.

...and speaking of shooting. In Orange County you can get shot at on the road with a road-rager.... Cross over into LA county and you WILL get shot at so... just let the idiots do their thing and steer clear.... unless you yourself have a gun and feel like playing along.
