Put up a John Elway avatar and I'll tell ya all about it.

Bronco_Beerslug 02-16-2007 12:23 PM

Small town, isolated, cold. Since you're wondering about work there (from Wiki) "Residents today find employment in many fields: coal mines, walmart, coal bed methane extraction, archaeology and engineering firms relating to methane exctraction, Wyoming Sawmills, Burlington Northern Railroad, and dude ranching."

:) also EMIT Technologies, banking, law firms; city, county, and state government; real estate, and hospitality.

My grandfather was in the VA in Sheridan for a while, and my Grandmother had a hard time finding a place to stay. The VA told her to check the homeless shelter! There is a boom of sorts going on around something, I think its the methane processing, and they are having a housing shortage, but jobs should be good, until it busts like oil in the 80's.

I grew up in Buffalo, 30 miles south of Sheridan, lots of my family still lives in the area.

It's a great great great place to live. When I was younger the economy wasn't great, based mostly on tourism, but now there's a natural gas boom and they can't find people to fill jobs fast enough. You'll have no trouble. In fact Gillette's been offering incentives for laid-off detroit autoworkers to move out there just to fill jobs.

Lake DeSmet is close by, the mountains are VERY close (lots of great locations near both Sheridan and Buffalo), and you can drive to Billings or Casper if you need to do any serious shopping.

If I could find a job in my field that pays what I'm making now, I'd move back there in a heartbeat. My advice: Live in Buffalo and make your husband commute to Sheridan. It's a 30 mile drive, all interstate highway and no traffic.

bendog 02-16-2007 12:46 PM

Sheridan's a great place. It's just way, way, way far away from anything. I believe Prince debuted his cherry moon movie there, which was the last time anyone heard of Prince or Sheridan until the last superbowl.

Seriously, it's not FLAT. Which in wyoming counts for a hell of a lot. The wind actually won't blow a double wide to S. Dakota.

I would think employment would be a problem, unless you happen to be a nurse or teacher or a professional in one of those underpaid disciplines. And they may have lots of teachers. Now doctors, prolly they need those.

heydensmom 02-16-2007 12:52 PM

I'm so screwed.

Pezman 02-16-2007 12:54 PM

Work from home? Werent you working an insurance type gig before? Maybe something tech-related that would let you be at home?

No you aren't. Sheridan is a pretty small town maybe 25,000 - 30,000 people, but it's alright. I've never really liked the town that much, but it's not bad. I just prefer Casper a lot more. There will be plenty of opportunity for employment. There is actually a lot more businesses then you would think. There a lot of job opportunities in WY right now. The area around there is beautiful. Especially the Big Horns.

Hey, at least Sheridan has a WalMart. That's pretty good for Wyoming.

bendog 02-16-2007 01:05 PM

God help you if you have to work at Wal-Mart.

If you want just stand out in your yard and you'll probably blow into South Dakota and we can go gambling in Deadwood, win our fortune, leave our spouses and live happily ever after!

Bronco_Beerslug 02-16-2007 01:07 PM

The wind definitely blows up there, but it does all over Wyoming.

Contrary to popular opinion, the northeast/central part of Wyoming isn't windy at all.

Gillette has some pretty crappy winter weather, but that's because God hates Gillette.

DeusExManning 02-16-2007 01:09 PM

No state taxes, really pretty area. I have a friend that works for the DA there and really loves it. You might be pleasantly surprised.
