Report: Reynolds fired by ESPN amid sexual harassment accusation

July 26, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- Harold Reynolds was fired by ESPN from his job as a baseball analyst after he was accused of sexual harassment, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

The former Gold Glove-winning second baseman, a member of the "Baseball Tonight" team for 11 years, said he didn't do anything to warrant his dismissal and wants his job back.

"It was a total misunderstanding," Reynolds told the Post. "My goal is to sit down and get back. To be honest with you, I gave a woman a hug and I felt like it was misinterpreted."

The newspaper, quoting sources, reported that the woman is an ESPN employee.

On Tuesday, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said Reynolds, 45, made his last on-air appearance for the network Sunday night. ESPN refused to comment on previous reports that Reynolds was dismissed, or to provide any details regarding his departure.

"All I can say is he is no longer working here," Krulewitz said.

Reynolds, who played 12 major league seasons, joined ESPN in 1996. In addition to his work on "Baseball Tonight," he also covered the College World Series and the Little League World Series.

ESPN already was dealing with the loss of another baseball analyst, Peter Gammons, who has been off the air since he was stricken with a brain aneurysm on June 27.

This is lame if it's true. He was just accused. Not convicted in a court of law...but accused. Just ridiculous. This country is so effed up. And all over a hug......that's a crock of crap.

Well that would be pretty effed up if it were true, but there will be more to the story.

You do not get fired for your first accusation of misconduct. It had to happen more than a few times with more than a few warnings, he didn't heed the warnings so now he is gone.

Especially an on-air personality, they know he would fight it tooth and nail if it were true that it was a 1 time misunderstanding. ESPN is a big company that will take all the right steps in firing one of the more popular workers they have, so I HIGHLY doubt that it was a 1 time misunderstanding.

And how would you know that? Do you work at ESPN? If not, for all you know, it WAS a hug and the little trick ran to management claiming sexual harrasment and he was fired.

Pathetic.

GonzoLays 07-26-2006 08:07 AM

Free Harold Reynolds.

Harold probably has ass waiting for him in every city, why does he need office ass? The story doesn't make any sense.

And we really need to clarify what is and what isn't sexual harassment. Unauthorized groping, yes, it is sexual harassment. Giving a trick a hug, no, that is not sexual harrassment. Walking by a woman and accidently grazing your shoulder against her hooters is not sexual harrasment. We need to clarify these things.

I enjoyed last night on SportsCenter when one of the talking hairpieces said that "ESPN has learned that Harold Reynolds has been fired from 'Baseball Tonight'." Great investigative journalism there guys! What'd it involve, going to the cubicle next to yours and asking Steve from HR "Was Harold canned today?"

You're not going to go on one of those huge posting sprees spouting so much nonsense that you make Llama look sane again are you?

No I work in for payroll, and I have for many years in 2 MAJOR companies in Colroado. We work with HR every day and go through dismissal processes with employees that are fired.....

but you are right, there a is HUGE process to get joe schmoo fired but a widely popular on-air personality with money to afford lawyers is getting canned on a 1 time accusation.

from pft.com

ESPN DUMPS REYNOLDS

Though it has nothing to do with football, we were stunned to see that ESPN abruptly fired baseball analyst Harold Reynolds.

So we poked around a little bit with some of our industry connections (yes, we have a few) to find out why Reynolds has gotten the boot.

Here's what we learned.

Reynolds recently had signed a new contract with ESPN, and was let go for "a fairly significant company violation." Fueled by rumors that we spotted on deadspin.com regarding the question of whether Reynolds had uttered phrases like "You're with me, leather" to one or more of his female co-workers, we pressed for more info, and our source told us that it was "definitely" a case of sexual harassment.

Based on our legal experience, it's unusual for the employer to dump the alleged harasser, if there's any concern that the matter might end up in litigation. It becomes difficult for the company to claim that the allegations aren't valid if the company has fired the guy.

Our guess? There must be some pretty damning evidence to prompt the network to move so quickly -- along the lines, say, of George Costanza's activities with the cleaning lady to whom he gave the sweater with the red spot. Otherwise, ESPN would have waited until a more natural point to sever the relationship.

Also, given that Reynolds had recently signed a new contract, it's pretty clear that this is something that just, um, popped up.

So what is the dismissal process for sexual harassment with the two MAJOR COMPANIES you worked for?

Let's say this woman accuses me of grabbing her ass in the copy room and exposing myself while everyone in the building is on lunch break. I fondle her up and down for a minute while talking some real nasty **** and then walk away. She runs to HR after you get back from your lunch break and tells you guys about it. What do you do? I get a warning?

Well more than likely they will let you go for the day "suspension/leave". Since no one seen it they need to investigate it more. Unless it was witnessed they will not fire you on the spot. Like I said they will ask you to leave take a few days to invetigate and get everything in order.

Really it is not a hard process to understand unless you have a me against the world attitude or you just have never had a serious job.

Since this was a surprise firing with him being on air as early as the night prior, that means he either did it a few times with warnings so this was the last straw or he was caught red handed by a higher up.

Au contraire mon frair! I worked as a financial analyst at MCIWorldcom when they were one of the largest corporations in the world.

Since I have never dealt with sexual harassment, I am just seeing what the process is. So what happens after the investigation? Obviously, since there were no witnesses I get my job back correct? It's like I get a free one time pass at sexually harassing a lady.

I dont think he has that kinda pull Ha!

Reynolds seems like a nice guy. Irvin got caught with drugs in his car and Reynolds hugs a gal and gets fired, go figure.

Does that mean I can get my stock options back?

Well I wouldn't call it a 1 time pass, because she can take it to the cops if she wants.

But on basis of the work part of it. If it was found to be true you would obviously be fired. But if they either found it to be true but couldn't get enough evidence to fire they will try to place either 1 of you in a different position away from eachother & give you a last chance warning which in the next case it comes up true or not you would probably be fired as it wouldn't be the first time the accusation happened.

Of course, we'll miss in the Little League finals, comparing 12-year olds to Jeter and explaining how 79 mph is really 99mph with the closer mound. Sad.
