Quarterbacks and 4th quarter comebacks

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/200...analysis/3978/

Excerpt:
Quote:

We looked at every game from the past ten seasons to see which recent quarterbacks have been the best at rallying their teams back from a deficit. And although he was known for comebacks early in his career, the top comeback quarterback might surprise you: it’s Jake Plummer, slightly ahead of Peyton Manning and Vinny Testaverde. It’s a surprising conclusion, but that’s the kind of insight rational statistical analysis can provide.
Table 1. Top 10 quarterbacks at comebacks since 1996
Rank Quarterback Wins Losses
1 Jake Plummer 19 28
2 Peyton Manning 19 29

Plummers comeback ability has drifted towards average since his first few seasons but his overall numbers still rate the best. Under Vince Tobin, he was a stellar 10-11 when trailing by one score in the fourth, and since then he is a solid 9-17. Peyton Manning holds the single-season mark with six comeback wins in 1999. Only the coldest, hardest, football fact-seeking Patriots fans would express surprise at Peyton Mannings high rank, but Vinny Testaverde is a bit of an eye-opener. However, Vinny was a comeback machine in 2000 and 2001, racking up nine wins in 17 comeback chances during those two seasons with the Jets. No other quarterback in the last decade had more than eight comeback wins in any two-year span.

Table 2. Bottom 10 quarterbacks at comebacks since 1996

160th out of 162: Brian Griese 4 wins, 20 losses

This is only ahead of beuerlein and brunnel.

This doesn't surprise me. Any time the Broncos were ten or more points down under Griese, I felt like I was walking the Green Mile.

When losers like Jon Kitna and Kerry Collins are on the list, you know it's bullcrap.

I'm with ya man, the world has gone downhill and bullcrappy ever since Topps started printing more than just TOTAL WINS on the back of Ferguson Jenkins trading cards.

You know what's impressive?

Fergie had 594 career starts and 267 complete games.

Code:

Year Ag Tm  Lg  W  L  G  GS  CG SHO  GF SV  IP    H    R  ER  HR  BB  SO  ERA  WHIP

1971 28 CHC NL  24  13  39  39  30  3  0  0  325.0  304  114  100  29  37  263  2.77  1.049

1974 31 TEX AL  25  12  41  41  29  6  0  0  328.3  286  117  103  27  45  225  2.82  1.008

In 1971, he had 30 complete games for the Cubs, on his way to a 24-13 record.

In 1974, he braved the blistering Texas heat to record 29 complete games for the Rangers, on his way to a 25-12 record.

So... Any idea what those numbers look like in the last three years?

Northman 06-26-2006 11:40 AM

Yea, i really dont care about what Jake has done 10 years ago. It would be nice to see some of that play right now.

He's only lost 15 games. Not a whole lot of opportunity for comebacks when you are on a consistent winner.

Funny, Elway never had a problem with that. You guys crack me up, your all so quick to give props to Jake's accomplishments but never want to face the music when he doesnt perform. Who gives a **** what he did in Az? I want to see that kind of play now. Yea, he does great when the pressure isnt on but when its time to really step up he disappears.

When did elway come back when he was down 3 TD's in a playoff game?

Plummer is no Elway but Elway isn't God either.

Yeah, Elway never had a problem leading 21 point comebacks. How many 3 TD comebacks did he lead in his career...1? 2 maybe? What cracks me up is people who blame everything on Jake when the defense is allowing practically ever 3rd down to be converted, not to mention that the 10 other guys who play offense did little to help. But, I guess it is all up to Jake to mount comeback by himself. ::)

I don't think Plummer has more than one or two as a Bronco. Get the same feeling when were behind with him too.

Reading comprehension helps a lot Rascal. I wasnt talking about playoff games specifically.

Never Blamed everything on Jake, but im tired you bozo's bringing out stats that have nothing to do with what is going on here in Denver. As for mounting a comeback, sure, it takes more than one guy but it also starts with one guy. But, i should be fair, he did try he just kept turning it over but he did try.

Yep. He shouldn't turn the ball over four times. But it probably would have helped if he hadn't had to press because his mediocre supporting cast on offense failed to give him any help. When the game is close or we are ahead, Shanny can use smoke and mirrors to get below average talents like Putzier open. When we have to go into pass first mode, the oppostion can focus solely on Rod because they know no one else can hurt them. Jake is NOT a great QB; he CAN'T do it on his own. You can't give him a water gun at a gun fight and be surprised when he doesn't win the ballgame.

I don't unless we're facing a really good defense. I've been critical of Jake many times, but he's such a huge upgrade over Griese. It was just demoralizing psychologically to have to root for that weak-armed, slow-footed, zero-charisma muthafuggah.

LOL...whatever you ****ed up and you know it.

Both you and Inferno were talking about the championship game SPECIFICALLY!!! You said Elway didn't have a problem coming back from 3 TD's down. And I'd like to know Elway's record on comebacks after being 3 TD's down.

actually, isn't it less? He only played 11 reglar season games in 2003.

I hated Griese but Plummer just doesn't give me much confidence he can bring us back when we're down late in a game.

I've "gotten it" the whole time. And I mean the whole she-bang...i.e. that you can win a title with pretty good QBs like Jake if you give him a good supporting cast. Any objective observer can see that his supporting cast last season was mediocre and that to expect him to create comebacks on his own against top defenses with that mediocre cast is silly.

Well, I'm counting the 3 playoff losses. 12 reg. season losses, though; you're right.
