Draft Perceptions

The one thing that comes to mind about all the discussions about the draft is the lack of discussion on how players fit into systems. Bad teams do not turn around overnight with High draft picks being the difference. They do turn around over time (SD, ATL, CAR).

There are very few players in each draft that can succeed in any system. These types are more "Jack of all trades, master of none" types. Is it any wonder that the teams who are always picking early in the first round have more "unsuccessful" 1st round type players (CIN,CLE,ARI)? Meanwhile, teams that have lower picks add Quality players and remain successful (NE, PHI, BAL, DEN).

The point being here is that how said draftee fits into the existing team framework is much more important than his "Generic NFL Evaluations". So much of the talk around here that focuses on the draft is comparison of abilities between players, both NFL and other Draftees, and NOT how said player's skill set fits the team that would draft him.

Nothing is more important in the NFL than how players fit the role they are supposed to execute. There are some extremely talented and gifted guys out there that will not be able to play in certain systems. This also pertains to FA and why there are so many Good players who move teams and do not play to the level they did previously.

The one thing that has seemed to change in the Broncos approach to the draft and FA RECENTLY is the ability to see how players fit the schemes used here. Hopefully, guys like Evan Mathis and Antonio Perkins will be targeted more since their skills match the team. Sure they may not be great fits on other teams, but their skills would allow them to make a great impact here in Denver.

Really, when it is all said and done, how a player is acquired is irrelavant to the team. What is relevant is their contribution and helping the team win games. True team players are worth their weight in Gold for franchises.

good point....that is why i think adrian mcpherson is the way to go for the broncos with one of their 3rd round picks. He is amazingly fast and mobile, and has a cannon. Plus it is the perfect situation, as he will have a few years to develop behind plummer. he seems very likely to be more than worth the risk somebody will take on him.

For what it is worth, Kiper has him as the 10th rated QB which makes him a 7th round wild shot or a FA

would rather have campbell if we are going to burn a first day pick on back up qb. we'll need to use the second (unlikely with our draft history) or third pick(s) on OG/C.

Saw Kiper on ESPN yesterday and he said that McPherson was a round 3 or round 4 guy.

Well in his defense, its like gauging market volatility. At first the draft is all about the scouts and on the field performance. Then as draft day approaches, somehow teams just start falling in love guys based on their stats and potential as prospsects and their on the field performance seems to fade. Its like we're picking sports cars. Point being, McPherson is a guy that is rising because he has had some "great workouts". You know, he can throw a ball 70 yards flat footed, which is great. But when is that relevant in a game? I digress.... So Mel probably gave some initial indications that McPherson as going late as a prospect, but now he is moving up as the buzz of draft day comes near.
