Dustin Colquitt
Why do some people want this guy in the 3rd round? When we can get a guy just a bit less impressive in the late rounds of the draft or undrafted. This guy is good, but heck he wasn't even as good as Shane Lechler. He is my top P but 3rd round worthy? I thought we learned after Nick Harris, look at the Packers. B.J. Sander they took in the 3rd round last year and he was a dud. Roudn 5 is the highest a punter should go!

He's not sponge worthy.

Hilarious!

Cole Farden has a stronger leg, can dominate kickoffs (especially in Denver), and can most likely be had in the late 5th or 6th.....if he's even drafted. I would rather spend one of the late 3rds on anything else at this point.

And John Daly can hit the ball further than Woods... Im not saying we should use a third on Colquitt, but great punters are based more on hang time and spot punting (hitting the sidelines, inside the 20s and such). When you have a great D then great punting can net you another 3-6 points just based on field position. |
If I was Denver I would focus on a guy that gets rid of the ball quickly. Harris was to SLOOOOWWW.
One of the critiques of Colquitt is that he also needs to speed up his motion....He has had some kicks blocked that were supposedly due to being slow. Getting the ball out safely is more important to me than an extra 5 net yards of distance. I really could care less what round he is drafted in...just find a punter that will make the final roster. |

IMO - The reason the Broncos punting has been poor is because the last few punters have all been "directional" kickers and not pure power and hangtime kickers. Hence, when the Broncos get stopped in their own end, the opposing team often starts with great field position. A stronger leg alone can eliminate much of this. I'm sick of seeing Bronco punts get fair caught at midfield. Bring on a guy like Farden! |
Dustin Colquitt is clutch, probably Tennessee's MVP. Colquitt has the best hang-time, but he needs to improve his speed.
Cole Farden needs to work on his directional and not outkick the coverage team so much... Both of them have excellent leg strength. |
I'd rather have Matt Payne.
|
I almost everyones eyes Colguitt is HANDS down the best punter in the draft. Why settle for another UDF like we always do?
|
Having just looked at Nick Harris's stats (he's with detroit now) he averages about 41 yrds per last season and has yet to have one blocked... So i think the needs to hurry up problem is fixable. With that in mind i would waste a 3rd on this Kid in a heart beat.
Strengths: A master at pinning opponents inside the twenty...Gets excellent hang time...Very strong leg...Can pooch punt or kick the ball for distance...Good size and solid athletic ability for the position...Prolific college player. Weaknesses: A little slow and may need to speed up his motion once in the pros...Can be a little more consistent...Has had a couple of punts blocked. Notes: A weapon in the battle for field position...One of the best punters to come along in a while and a legitimate first day prospect...Father and brother were also punters for the Vols. |

The problem is...if he doesn't win the job in training camp..there is no way that Denver will carry two punters into the season. so unless he has a mysterious injury...it will be a wasted pick. There is no margin for error and no time to develop like other positions. If he is drafted in the late 3rd...you might have to live with him being a little slow...even if it means having a couple blocked (which knowing Denver's luck the last couple of years, will be in the last seconds of a game turning play)... |

For what it is worth...I would love to see a decent punter for a change and he IS the best punter in this draft. |
He will be gone in the second....some team will poop the bed and pick him early...

When was the last time we saw one kicked out of bounds inside the 20 yard line except by accident. I agree they have not had a decent punter for years and it is a need, but I don't think it is worth a third round pick with all of the other needs they have. Kiper has the Broncs taking Colquitt in the 6th round which is Ok, but I would still be looking for depth on the OL with that pick. |

Just because they haven't lived up to it in Denver doesn't mean that wasn't the reason they were brought in. Kiper is on crack if he thinks Colquitt will be available in the 6th round. He won't make it through the third. Regardless, I still think the third round is way too early to take a punter when you can get the second or third best punter in the country (whose net punting and kickoff average is probably going to be within a yard or so of the best) in the 6th round or later. |
colquitt is hands down the best punter in the draft...so to say you would "rather" have someone else is stupid. If we took the chance and spent a 3rd round pick on him...provided he lasts that long...he would shore up a very weak punting game
i personally feel that someone who can help in the game of field position, and keep your defense in good situations against moss and co., priest holmes, LT, etc....is worth a 3rd round pick you would be hard pressed to find someone else that late in round 3 who could make such an immediate difference |

fyi - Nick Harris was supposedly an even better prospect than Colquitt coming out of college and if you look at his numbers in the pros, he is well below average in both net and gross yards per punt. |
You could make an arguement that Payne's ability to kick as well as punt makes him more valuable than Colquitt, since he's a backup K on your roster without using up another spot.
Taking a P with one of our 3rd rounders, with all the high potential talent that should still be available, isn't something I'm real crazy about. Vince Jackson over Colquitt any day, thanks. |
good call....except that vincent jackson will not last til the end of the third round....good try though.
with colquitt the very worst you would get is mediocrity, which is still ten times better than what we have now, out of a third round pick, there is virtually no risk involved, only reward. i'm not saying i want him no matter what...but i think we should think very seriously about our kicking situation...and if no one better is available, to go for it. having a dominant punter is like having a twelve defensive player in a way |
Matt Payne is a better fit. He could back up Elam, and is more athletic. Not as accurate, but a better fit for our system.
|
I agree
