Broncos management
From the Rocky Mountain News..
With most of the Broncos management, including coach Mike Shanahan, here(Hawaii) for the league meetings, defensive end Marques Douglas is expected to visit with the team's defensive coaches today at the Dove Valley complex. Douglas had seven sacks for the Baltimore Ravens last season --------------- So sund. and Shanny are both chilling in on the beach and Coyer and the boy's are doing their work for them? No wonder things haven't gone their way this offseason. So much for being hands on.......... Stuff like this drives me nut's. You have Gibbs and Snyder flying out to Cleveland, the day he was cut, to visit Brown to set the ground work for his meeting a few days later. Where as Shanny and Sund. just sit back and have F.A. come to them. Now with Marques they aren't even there! I know dollars are what drive the market. But still a player wants to be wanted. Brown has gotten on the love from the Redskins even though he may not be getting the money,as in salary/incentive deal, still the skins made it an issue to deal with him from day one adn made the effort to go and see him. Just like Detriot did with Garcia flying him to Indy and paying for his stay just so he could workout for them and other teams. I think/feel that somewhere somehow the way things are run in Denver have gone off track. Players want money yes, but you have to sell them on why they should come to Denver and it should come from the headman first. Having Bailey and Warren call Brown is fine. But still to land a guy you need to put more effort in to it. Just my opinion. |
Both usually don't go to the meetings. For both to be there you have to assume that there is a reason, hopefully something is close to going down on some other non-FA front (i.e. Pryce).
|
Playing hard to get is all part of the plan. Between 9 holes, maybe they can figure out how to get a conditional 3rd for Pryce. After all, this Pryce situation is on the hot burner, it's not like they haven't had over half year to figure out what to do with him.
Douglass can wait. It's all part of the plan. |
You guys need to relax a bit.
|
This is Marques Douglas, not someone like Jevon Kearse.
They know exactly how much money that can offer Douglas, and not a penny more. It doesn't take a crowd of high priced lawyers, the owner, coach etc to make an offer they can't negotiate due to salary crap constraints. And, btw, for all the ass-kissing and grovelling Synder and Gibbs have done, Courtney Brown still hasn't committed to them and has moved onto Seattle. The only glaring failure this management is guilty of is being grossly unprepared for Pryce balking at renegotiating his contract. Those guys knew by the first month of the 2004 season that Pryce may not be the same player again. They knew Hayward was playing well and that Trevor's cap charge of around $10million was crippling to their plans in Free Agency. Well instead of getting down to the task in September, Oct, Nov, Dec etc they left it a bare few days before free agency and when Pryce refused they were royally screwed instead of having a contingency plan. |

Also, it's not "cut and dried" what Denver can offer anyone. Finally, I am not saying Shanahan needed to fly to Baltimore to kiss his ass, like Gibbs did with Brown, but maybe a one on one conversation would be good for both parties, or I guess he can just text message him with his Nextell phone. At that point, why even bother wasting the airfare? He's got a damn computer right? |

So Snyder has flown to see Brown, so what? Did they sign him when he was at Redskins park? No. What is the big deal with both Shanny and Ted being in HI? I am sure they are trying to close the deal on something......it's not like they are taking a vacation.... |

If they gave a rats ass, maybe Sundquist would meet with the eccentric Tuna in Dallas. The fact of the matter is these powerfreaks have video phones and all the tools to comunicate they need. It's not like they need to go to Hawaii to make deals any more than they need to go to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. Reality Check on Aisle 9.... |

It's seems it is you that need the reality check....Brown came to the Broncos HQ and they probably talked numbers, he left and went to DC and now FL. Do the Broncos need to stay on the airport runway in order to fly off at a moments notice if Brown trips to clean his boo boo? Please.... Why would Sundquist fly to Dallas when they could both meet in HI? |
My point was and still is that there was a time when it was Shanny making visit's to players. Just a few years ago he went to N.C. and begged Steve Berr-line to comeback for one more year and help Jake. I remember he would go and get the agents, not just sit back and let them come to him. There was a time where Shanny worked his ass off to get things done.
I understand it's money, but still if your an FA and you have two teams rather close in dollars, but one is coming to your place and talking to you the minute you are free, wouldn't yourself feel more wanted? |

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2017911 Sorry, but once again, Marques Douglas is just a player. Not a stud, franchise defender or even pro bowler. He's just a damn freakin' player and right now, Shanahan, just like most coaches and ALL owners in the NFL has more pressing matters in the annual NFL League Meeting. By the way, the Broncos actually have a salaried professional to look out for free agent acquisitions as he does every single year: Rick Smith. If Marques Douglas doesn't sign in Denver it won't be because Shanahan didn't brown nose him, it'll because he got a better offer elsewhere. I.e. Last year Lynch signed last year not because Shanahan held his hand and walked him around Dove Valley. It was because he got a great offer from Denver and Larry Coyer (yes the same dude talking to Douglas) convinced Lynch that he would employ a very, very similar defense as Tampa's. Get over it people. Marques Douglas is just another Keith Washington. |
Just curious..
Do some of you micro-manage your spouse's or S/O’s life the way you do the Bronco's organization? Who the hell knows what lengths the Bronco's organization is or is not going to in order to land talent? Just because they aren't doing your punch list of items doesn't mean they are 'chillin on the beach'. The genesis of moving Pryce might HAPPEN in Hawaii...which seems to me a lot more important that getting Brown or MD. Judging Mike or Ted on the final product they put on the field is fine...but to look at every little thing that happens..or you think happens...and then extrapolate that into some higher meaning or deficiency seems anal without knowing all the facts. |

Q: Why did the wife cross the road? A: Who cares! What the hell was she doing outside the kitchen in the first place! -Just kidding, btw- |
So we get to herar whining if Shanahan is too "hands on" and we get to hear the same people whine he is too "hands off".

I agree with you all the way up to your veiws on Douglas. While he is far from being a super star he is a very sure tackler. Two straight years with 50 plus tackles is a good thing imo. |

Excerpt from Pro Football weekly stating the obvious...
Broncos' failure to address D-line needs is a mystery Denver It didn’t come as a huge surprise when the Broncos chose not to compete with Jacksonville’s expensive pitch for unrestricted DE Reggie Hayward, but the team’s lack of effort to upgrade the defensive line, especially considering the fact Trevor Pryce is on the trading block, has been somewhat baffling thus far in free agency. The Broncos did trade for Browns DT Gerard Warren, but his underachieving past hardly excites some observers. The Broncos spent $22.5 million, including an $8.5 million signing bonus, to bring OLB Ian Gold back to town in preparation for a possible move to more of a 3-4 look but have not been able to bolster a very mediocre D-line after watching former Seahawk Chike Okeafor sign with Arizona and former Dolphin Bryan Robinson head to Cincinnati and holding only lukewarm negotiations with other candidates. |

Ya there also was a time when winning the divison and playoff games where much more important, not to mention building championship caliber teams......I think it was back in 98-99, then being on a golf course. Dallas wanted Pyrce before and gave teh Broncos an offer. They declined. So now you think a triple threat of Mike/Sund/Pat are going to get the deal done? How many FA have gone threw Dove Valley this year and left to sign else where? Maybe six or seven? Just saying there was a time when things, like winning, got done in Denver. It started at the top and worked it's way down. |

**Not trying to sound like an ass, i just don't understand or agree with all the negativity lately. There is nothing wrong with questioning things, but you have been questioning every little thing. I'm sure that even Shanahan himself isn't happy with the way the offseason has went so far. But there are some things that are just out of his control.** |
Wait a minute.
Why is it because Shanny and Sundquist are in Hawaii they are suddenly "not worried about building a championship caliber team" and just playing golf? I expect that every man (or woman) needs to have some time off and judging by the time Shanny spends at work for this organization I can find no fault in him for going to Hawaii or going golfing or doing whatever the hell else he wants to do in his spare time. So Marques whoever got cut. The fact that I dont even know who it is should tell you that its not a freaking superstar that is all of a sudden going to change the defensive front around. |
Not only that, but their not in Hawaii for vacation. Their there for the league meetings. Somthing that I'm sure is a little more important then shaking someones hand. They can still talk to Douglas over the phone and probably did.
|
I be more pissed off for them not being in Hawaii for the meetings. This is were deals get done, and rule changes occur. I rather have Shanny working on the cut-block agenda then meeting with 2nd tier FAs
