SoCal's Mid and Late Round Gems
 

Anthony Crissinger-Hill, TE Florida Atlantic- under the radar player who has tremendous talent but hidden away at a small Division 1-aa school.
Stefan LeFors QB, Louisville- very accurate, mobile and smart qb who will be unfairly downgraded by scouts due to his 5-11 size.
Spencer Havner, LB UCLA- LB with excellent instincts overshadowed by crosstown star Matt Grootegood.
Craphonso Thorpe WR Florida State- probable last first round selection in 2004 but for a broken leg. Has had a bumpy ride during senior season recovering from injury but when he is all the way back will be a steal after being picked in the midrounds.
Chris Rix QB Florida State- possesses tremendous arm strength, good accuracy and excellent mobility (4.4). Has every physical tool and a hard worker. Has suffered from making many stupid mistakes and has been coached poorly. With quality coaching he could end up a top flight NFL starter.

LeFors is gonna be the story of the draft because of the deaf family.

Beezlebub. RB. Backyard. Elusive, has been known to taunt Labradors and hates Squirrils, will go out of his way to hunt them. Hands are questionable, as his front claws are gone. Attitude problems, but has the speed to be an impact player. Doesn't bathe, which lends to some problems with other players. A bit undersized at a hoizontal 3 feet including tail.

Prefers to be call FatCat now.

Matt Roth, Iowa. DE, 6-4, 270. Converted LB that can drop into zone coverage and also is very diruptive and agressive to the passer. A roughing of the passer candidate, but manages to stay in mind.

Excellent first step which is second to his non stop motor. Great instincts. Channels his game to Dick Butkis. Hard hitter, good tackler.

Can overrun plays at times and lose containment trying to go outside the edge, may lack NFL strength at the next level.

hey mock your boy roth is moving up the boards, i think on mel's big board i saw him projected to go in Round 1 i dont think we will have a shot at him in Round 2. he might be there when we pick in round 1 though.

It's hard to hide speed and dominance and 9-2. That kid TATE at QB has played well. I thought he was in the draft. He would be a perfect compliment as a backup. Before Roth was even on the board as a top 10 DE I was telling people. OH Well. He's not the only DE out there, but he plays like Howie Long.

You know how much I want another RDE. Predator, Heyward and Pryce, (if he can come back) should be ok. I wouldn't mind a DT. I really haven't looked at the draft. I expect us to draft at 32.

Aside from Chris Ric, a very nice list.

LeFors throws the best ball that I've watched this year, truly a perfect passer that is the Louisville Cardinals. A damn shame that they were trying to develop true freshman Blake Brohm so hard that they were rotating series every so often to begin the year, LeFors won his job twice this year.

Loved seeing Havner play, good shedding of blocks and elusive to the ball, could be a keeper.

Thorpe is a true gem, I think he has a lot of upside and can make the tough catch. Problem I've seen with him is that he tends to use his body to catch the ball at times, NFL coaches can get him to break that habit though.

Wow, you think Rix was coached unproperly? i strongly disagree with this as Rix on more than 1 occasion had opportunities to make a name for himself but kept shooting himself in the foot.

Rix is on that list but not Clarett??

I'm totally shocked you had a response with Clarett's name in it. You've currently shown that you know exactly 1 person that will be in the draft this year, and sadly as soon as I saw that you replied to this thread, before even opening it up, I knew that you would have something to say about Clarett.

I'm not sure about coached poorly, because Bowden has 350 reasons for me to think otherwise, but in his case this year he just didn't have anyone outside of Thorpe that was worth giving a damn about.

Honestly, they've put up a total of about 600 yards of offense in their last 3 games, that is god aweful for the open game that college tends to play. OSU alone, who has a bad offense, put up over half of that against a quality Michigan team, FSU beat NCSU 17-10 and managed a total of 123 yards on offense that game.

So even when they are winning, they aren't winning with their offense out there, because Rix or Sexton doesn't make a difference, it's Thorpe and a guy who is more known as P.K. Sam's lil bro than his actual game performances out there on the field.

Not sure where Roth will go in this draft, he's one of them "Tweeners" that could drop a few due to that, much like Corey Redding of Texas did a few years back. Super talented, engine always going, intensity to match anyone, but his OLB? MLB? DE? questions could play a role in him slipping a bit.

Redding looked like he was going to us at pick 20 that year, fell to the Lions(?) in round 2, so not a big slip, but a good 10-15 at least.

The real gem(not late round gem), but true 1st round gem in this draft from Iowa is Abdul Hodge. I dar say it, he has that sideline-to-sideline speed, but is big and physical enough to play MLB in the NFL, unlike a certain OLB from Michigan who Denver toted around his sideline-to-sideline speed, but after that project went down the tubes he now resides in Tampa playing as a Buccaneer.

I'm still miffed at the fact that Philly has a chance at getting back-2-back picks if they win the Super Bowl and Miami finishes dead last, that'll give them pick 32 and 33 and they can do some serious damager with that, whether they make 2 picks or use it as leverage to trade.

For those that do not see the local publicity, you may want to take a look at Vincent Jackson of Northern Colorado. 6'6", 235#. 4.35 WR Walter Payton award finalist.

Another of my mid to late round gems:
Chase Lynam, WR California- Big, Fast WR with good hands who has "it", midseason injury will drop him like a rock but he is a true sleeper who i think will be a very good NFL WR.

Let me add yet another mid to late round gem since i think he will come out:
Frank Gore, HB Miami (Fla.). Was an awesome freshman, with an eye popping 9.1 YPC average (64 for 500). He was ahead of Willis McGahee on the depth chart and then tore an ACL. Out for 2002. In 2003, the acl injury robbed alot of the speed he had but before he tore the other ACL was running at about 5.0 YPC. Two torn ACLs, one on each knee. 2004- he doesnt have the speed back yet, but he is great power and amazing vision. Better vision than any Miami RB in the past, including Clinton Portis. He is a bruiser too. When his speed comes back he will be a great running back. Even without that speed he is averaging 5.3 YPC this season and you can see the last two games he is starting to come full circle. Keep an eye on Frank, he is a good story and even though for selfish reasons i would like him to come back for his senior season, i hope he goes pro so he can get his money. He is very poor and his mother has been getting blood transfusions for several years. I think he will be a monster next year with an offseason of fully healthy work, but for his sake i hope he does it in the pros getting a salary, he cant afford another injury, esp. with his family situation. He'll prolly be a third rounder, but if he is healthy and when he gets that speed back, he has unquestionable first round talent.
