Rush

Alright Music Buffs how many of you listen to Rush? ???

Whats your take on em', Personaly I like them alot...

Evenrude 09-03-2004 11:25 AM

I like Rush..... back in my drumming days I was a huge Neil Peart fan. I still put in 2112 overture every now and then.

Hogan11 09-03-2004 04:27 PM

I always liked Rush in spite of the what I feel are the band's limitations (Lee's Donald Duck crossed with a vaccum cleaner voice, Peart's BS sci-fi fantasy songwriting). The musicianship is always first rate (Neil Peart is still the best post-Keith Moon drummer out there IMO) and there always seemed to be a lot less pretention in what they do, even when they try to be pretentious.....I think "Subdivisions" is still the best song they ever came up with, if I had to choose one, that is.

I have quite a few Rush releases but I've never seen them live....I would like to someday.

When Rush's first album came out, I initially dismissed them as "your younger brother's band."

Over time, I had to re-evaluate my position.

I realized Alex Lifeson was a very respectable guitar player--particularly where his chordal work and his ability to write cool riffs and interesting hooks were concerned.

Geddy's voice is a matter of personal taste, I guess, but you gotta like the fact that he writes thinking man's lyrics.

And Peart is a top-notch drummer as far as rock drummers go.

Funny how a non "POP" styled rock band from Canada still gets into many main stream conversations. This must be a statement on their importance to Rock fans. Especially in my era-70s early 80s when they really knew how to rock. Seen em 5 times. 1st time in 1982. In Albucracky. Neil still had the handelbar stache. Frickin unreal. Saw them last summer. Still blew me away.

I'll never forget when we were leaving the venue, a group of oh, say 18-20 yr olds standing around saying, "Man, who are those guys, that was unbelievable" I smiled.

Crushaholic 09-07-2004 10:37 PM

Rush is one of those groups that I can take in small doses. After a while, Geddy Lee's voice just sounds irritating to me.

The chops and song composition were head and shoulders above their homeland competition....That's why people remember Rush right off the bat and tend to forget bands like Trimuph, April Wine and Chilliwack...all of which might have had a song/album or two but then vanished without a trace.

Movement went from 3/4 time to 4/4 time in an instant, with all clarity and song structure intact. Nobody does it better IMO. April Wine, Triumph were secondary Bands, but good ones too.

RukdaFaidas 09-08-2004 10:18 AM

Rush is my favorite band and have seen them on 4 tours, including June 13th of this year. I thought this years show was the best yet and my second favorite concert of all time. Pink Floyd's Momentary Lapse of Reason tour will never be topped, IMO.

Just showing that none of their fellow countrymen could match them is all.

I hated Trimuph & Chilliwack actually....April Wine I could take or leave...Nature Of The Beast was a decent album and "Just Between You And Me" was a fave high school make out track perferable to any REO Speedwagon that dominated the day then...but that was about the only waves they made outside of Canada.

I didn't mind Triumph. I've always liked April Wine's "Just Between You And Me" even though I couldn't name any other song they did.

And speaking of Canada.....I'll bet Hogan wasn't a big fan of Loverboy either. Just a hunch.

April Wine had a few songs in Canada...but "Just Between You And Me" was the only one that took off in the States.

Loverboy?!? Oh God No..... :nono:

For me it was Harder Faster. Their best IMPO. "I Like to Rock"...Pretty popular in HS. Used to play that song before games in the locker room to pump us up.
Who is Chilliwack? What songs would be called their signature songs?

Harder Faster was ok...a lot of people liked that one...I was lukewarm to it.

Chilliwack was most known for a song called "My Girl" a doo wopish type pop/rock song thing that was all over MTV in the early years...they were a long running medicore Canadian outfit that had it's cult of fans and that was about it.

Dr. Broncenstein 09-08-2004 06:13 PM

I appreciate their individual talent and I would really like them... if they didn't suck.

Dr. Broncenstein 09-08-2004 06:15 PM

Maybe that was a bit harsh... but I cant get over the dude's voice... straight out of the lollipop guild.

yeah Dr. I can understand that. Geddy has a shrilly high pitched voice, But... on 2112, that guy friggin screams out the vocals.

He is def an original.

Speaking of Canadian rock bands, I always thought the Pat Travers Band was really underrated--especially the early lineup w/ Tommy Aldridge on drums, Mars Cowling on bass, and Pat Thrall on guitar.

Yep, that was a badass tour. Gilmour took no prisoners, and those chicks singing backup vox were off the mo****in' hook! :)

Any of you all that have XM Radio, Rush will be doing a special set with just Al and Geddy. Some sort of retrospective interview/live show. Airs a few time next month.

By the way, if you dont have XM...You're sorely missing out. Its really good. And at 10.00/month its money well spent IMO.

I remember "Sign of the Gypsy Queen," I Like to Rock," and "Enough is Enough" getting a lot of radio play in the 80s.

The video for "Enough is Enough" was badass!

The band's version of King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" was pretty dope too.

alkemical 09-26-2004 09:12 AM

Rush is a band for me that some stuff is damn good, but the singing voice of geddy... a girl would do a better job.....

but their music is good
