Patent Office Cancels 'Redskins'

annnndd here we go.

http://money.cnn.com/2014/06/18/news...html?hpt=hp_t2

I know it was posted in the Around the NFL thread but I think this one deserves its own thread.

kappys 06-18-2014 09:23 AM

Beginning of the end for the Redskins name, could take a while longer before it gets officially changed though

bombay 06-18-2014 09:24 AM

They have no choice about changing the name now. Anyone can make and sell Redskins gear.

I tried to find the older threads but couldn't.

These fascists like Reid love racism. They need it and survive on the assumption of it to push their agendas. Any rational person can see the name means the war paint used when going into battle. You know, something the redksins do on Sundays. It's symbolic of the courage aloquins(spelling) had when facing battles. With "red" ****ing paint on their "skin". "Redskin". To a person who loves the idea racism can get votes, it means a scalped face.

ludo21 06-18-2014 09:28 AM

I think what bothers me most is the amount if conversation this is getting in Washington, just a waste of time better spent elswhere (immigration reform, VA, etc_)

But those aren't problems to them! They want all that swept under a rug. It's election year. Gotta run on the assumptions of racism to get the weak minded voters!

The ****ed up part of the Washington redskins name isn't redskins, it's Washington.

Don't get ahead of yourselves people. This is not the first time this has happened. Washington had their trademark revoked back in 1999 only to have it reinstated in 2005.

Even if they are unable to reinstate their trademark this time, the ruling in no way shape or form compels the Washington Redskins to change their logo, colors, or nickname. And while it does make it more difficult for them to prevent counterfeiters from imposing on the logo, it does not render them without recourse.

Essentially, this is a moral victory and possibly a short-lived one. Personally, I think it is inevitable that at some point the Redskins will change their name. I wish they would do is sooner rather than later because the story bored the hell out of me 8 years ago, and the prospect of it dominating every off season news cycle for the next decade depresses me severely.

It's a tired argument, and I'm not sure what Washington/The NFL is holding on to. Obviously, it bothers people, a lot of people and regardless of whether or not it was intended, it can be seen as offensive. No one will miss it. If you change the name of the team, its not like people will stop watching. Who cares, just change it, sell a buttload of new merch.

I love the idea of calling them the Red Tails. You can honor ww2 african american pilots in a predominant african american league, its a cool namesake, a cool name, would make for a cool logo, and you keep the "red" in the name. Plus, calling them the tails is cool.

Capital hill and politicians want so badly to have their finger in the nfl pie. This is their way of getting in. Desperate.

HILife 06-18-2014 10:20 AM

Interesting. That should get Dan "douchebag" Synder's attention.

They should make every team with an Indian nickname do the same.

Smiling Assassin27 06-18-2014 10:28 AM

Sign of the fascist America that picks winners and losers based on whim and the strong arming of a vocal minority.

Teddy Roosevelt once said that while he didn't believe that the only good indian was a dead indian, he believed that this applied in 9 out of 10 cases. Why is he still on Mount Rushmore? Harry Reid still uses 'negro' in his vocabulary, why is he still a senator?

I'd be more pissed at the gov't 'help' that led to corruption, casinos, rampant alcoholism, poverty and unemployment that a team called the Redskins.

no, see, there's this thing called a Constitution in which the gov't cannot 'make' any team do anything but operate within the law. the slippery slope is a high one.

bpc 06-18-2014 10:29 AM

Where's PETA at to break off the nfl teams with endangered species names! Lions, eagles, dolphins, etc. Rest assured, it's coming.

HILife 06-18-2014 10:39 AM

They should change their name to the Washington All Blacks and do the Haka before every game.

hmmmm...sounds like it will just go to federal court again and get overturned if the burden of proof is still the same.

I disagree, this is nothing more than a left wing side show agenda where liberals force people down a rabbit hole in order to avoid real injustices like immigration refore.

I still, in some context, use the word Negro. It's spanish. It means "black". I live around a bunch of Africans...actual I just came here from Africa...and some find that calling existing Negro's in this country African-Americans offensive. I find that interesting. I am also dating a woman from Mexico and that's the word she uses as well. Last I checked the UNCF was still taking donations. I guess my point is there are so many other reasons to dislike Harry Reid. This isn't one of them IMO.

Yes, its our agenda. C'mon. The better question is why do you care so much to hold on to a name that, regardless of what you think, offends a good deal of people. Change the name, make new cool merch, make money off that.

This isn't unraveling the fabric of america, nor is it some trojan horse for a liberal agenda. Thats a paranoid speak. Its changing a team's name. There's a lot of things that will continue to change as society gets more progressive (and all societies do). I dont see the point of holding on to this.

"A good deal of people" is debatable. Either way the SCOTUS has already ruled that Dan Synder owns the name so for me it's the not the name or keeping it or getting rid of it. It's property. He owns it. It's his. Not yours or anyone elses.

The current congress is handcuffed by Republican majority, who are in 'do nothing' mode since there is a Democrat in the white house. Don't look for them to do anything.

Yeah, I think the writing is definitely on the wall now that they lose their trademark. They will be losing so much money if they keep using that trademark (name and logo) and money is the bottom line in the NFL so I look for them to find something new quite fast.

Enough that some groups are making friggin commercials about it. And this is nothing new, the minority has been protesting the redskin name for years.

But again, why hold on to it? What's the benefit? Tradition? C'mon. Its not like people will stop coming to their games or stop being fans. I think the change is inevitable, so we might as well do it, get it over with, so we can stop discussing such a stupid thing

If anyone thinks rights in America aren't under attack and your freedom isn't at risk remember 6/18/2014. What a ****ing joke.
