Amy Van Dyken severs spine in ATV accident

Local of Colorado and her husband is former Broncos punter Tom Rouen.

IndelibleScribe 06-09-2014 03:15 PM

That sucks, I hope that she can recover from that. Prayers for her and Rouen.

DenverDynamite 06-09-2014 03:31 PM

My brother-in-law almost got himself killed on an atv. Color me not a fan. Hopefully Amy will recover enough to have a full life.

HILife 06-09-2014 03:46 PM

That's terrible. Hope the best for her.

misturanderson 06-09-2014 03:55 PM

That's awful. You don't recover from a severed spinal cord. She will be paralyzed from the waist down. I would think the immediate concern would be myelomalacia secondary to the trauma.

I can't imagine dealing with that after being as active as she must be.

Bronc0guy 06-09-2014 03:59 PM

Awful to hear. Always sad when something like this happens, I couldn't even imagine.

Irish Stout 06-09-2014 04:06 PM

Awful thing to happen. ATVs and horses can really hurt people. I suppose cars aren't great either, but its one thing to be out on a trail having fun to deal with this ****.

elsid13 06-09-2014 04:17 PM

That really really sucks.

DENVERDUI55 06-09-2014 06:17 PM

Ugh she was swim coach at my boys HS. That is terrible news. A great friend I grew up with did same thing and is paralyzed from mid chest down on a motorcycle.

Ray Finkle 06-09-2014 07:51 PM

That's awful.

Old Dude 06-09-2014 08:16 PM

Horrible news about one of Colorado's best athletes of the last quarter century.

Mogulseeker 06-09-2014 08:23 PM

I hate this... looks like her spinal cord is completely severed. As far as I know you can't recover from that.

I met her at the Red Robin in Highlands Ranch @ 470 and Broadway. She was nice enough to let me and my sister take a picture with her.

baja 06-09-2014 08:31 PM

That is just a horrifying image.

ZONA 06-09-2014 10:42 PM

Never been a fan of the quads myself. I know I'd want to go like a bat out of hell and probably launch myself into a cactus or something.

Best wishes to her.

UltimateHoboW/Shotgun 06-09-2014 10:43 PM

This is actually making me cry. :'(

I think that is all you hope for in accidents like these.

maven 06-09-2014 10:52 PM

ATV's are fun to ride. It was my daily driver down in Santorini. Hope she recovers.

Rabb 06-10-2014 06:43 AM

Really sad news. Hate hearing about this for anyone, but obviously her being such a local sports icon it hits home. She can't recover from this though, severed spine is as absolute as it gets. Just ****ing tragic.

theAPAOps5 06-10-2014 06:58 AM

That sucks

Ol#7 06-10-2014 07:44 AM

Damn, one of my favorite athletes ever. Hope she recovers as much as is possible, and is able to enjoy life to its fullest.

B-Love 06-10-2014 09:30 AM

Even though it was just trivial fun, I feel bad bashing Captain Touchback, as we used to call him back in the day. That's such a fear of mine for myself and my kids. I have no interest in riding any type of motor sport vehicle, primarily because of that fear. Sad story!!

Smiling Assassin27 06-10-2014 10:32 AM

Awful. May the Lord bless and comfort her and her family in this excruciatingly difficult time.
