A Backstage Pass to the NFL

Great read even before the last 3 questions. An anonymous scout talks about his profession.

calls out the broncos for having one of the best scouting departments

Wow, that was great. I read the whole thing with slurred speech in mind, and it turns out the anonymous scout was Matt Russell.

Who can't imagine Josh McDaniels pitching a hissy fit over not getting a player, and the player drafted ends up being Demarius Thomas. Hahahahahahahah!

I don't know what I liked better, the kudos for the Broncos, or the slam on Belicheck. Pleasantly surprised he was frank enough to call out a media darling that has warts of late.

Free peppermint schnapps is a heck of a perk.

One in particularly involved a GM and the head coach. I was just an intern moving the name magnets on the draft board. The head coach was dead set on taking a certain DB in the first round. The GM said they needed to trade the pick and move back in the draft and that the DB would still be there. The head coach objected, but the GM promised him the DB would still be there. We traded the pick and the DB was picked a few spots later and we missed him. The head coach was so ticked off he left the office and didnít come back for the rest of the draft! The tension in the room was thick. In the end, the GM was right because the guy we picked will be a Hall of Fame WR candidate.
This sounds like the 2003 Cardinals. Didn't they trade their pick and Marcus Trufant was taken a few slots later? But they drafted Anquan Boldin that year in round two and he went crazy.

Enjoyed the read, but he really doesn't understand Moneyball at all, it's not using stats to find better players (although he is right that in baseball you can use stats much more easily than football), but finding undervauled-ness. To put it into football example, if the entire league is moving to big, but slow guys, then those guys will command the big contracts and you might be able to find an advantage in signing smaller, yet faster players who are out of favor at the moment.

For a real world example - Shanahan basically had this when we went with the zone blocking scheme and were able to pretty much draft any OL we wanted in the late rounds. As more teams copied our success, the price ($ and draft position) went up.

good read. Thanks!

I can't imagine him not slamming Raiders for a horrible scouting department. The suckitude for 10 plus years is inspiring.

Nice read.

I was right about Clausen. ;D

I read it before reading this comment and by the end of it I was thinking this definitely was somebody with the Broncos who sat through the McD era.
