Birther conversion

Classic Ha!Faux news is like a bad car wreck.

Sean Hannity's Birther Conversion

After much public spectacle and uncountable hours wasted, the reelection of Barack Obama kindled a small, wonderful hope that maybe we were done talking about birth certificates and presidential eligibility. Unfortunately, that discussion has now engulfed Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX): U.S. citizen, presumed presidential aspirant, and accidental Canadian. A few fringe actors have questioned whether Cruz is eligible to occupy the White House, and Fox News' Sean Hannity, who countenanced the high-profile conservative/Republican birther crusade to force Obama to release his birth certificate, is outraged.

Cruz was born in Calgary 42 years ago to an American mother and a Cuban father. The Constitution requires that the president be a "natural-born citizen," though it does not define the term and the Supreme Court has never specifically defined it either. But Cruz has been a U.S. citizen since birth and there's no real reason to think he can't run for president should he so choose and hold that office if elected. Being born in Alberta, however, means that Cruz is, or was a some point, also a citizen of Canada. Presumably seeking to nip the eligibility question in the bud, Cruz released his birth certificate on August 18 and announced that he would renounce any formal ties he still retains to our northern neighbor.

Hannity said during his August 19 Fox program that Cruz's actions "put this so-called controversy to rest," and went on to attack "the left" for "flirting with birtherism," asking whether it means liberals are "racist against a Hispanic":

Absent from Hannity's attack on "the left" was any specific example of a high-profile liberal or Democrat who has actually questioned Cruz's eligibility. That differentiates Cruz birtherism from Obama birtherism, which has adherents in the House Republican caucus, was endorsed by Hannity's Fox News colleagues, and became an absurd national spectacle in early 2011 owing to the incessant agitating of fake Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The two strains also differ in that no one doubts Cruz's U.S. citizenship or his place of birth, while the animating principle of Obama birthers is that Obama is lying about where he was born and engaged in a decades-long conspiracy to falsify documents to that effect.

At the time, Sean Hannity didn't really have a problem with the fact that so many prominent people on his side of the ideological spectrum were enthusiastic believers in an insane, sprawling conspiracy theory, and repeatedly stated that the president should release his birth certificate (Obama had done so, three years earlier). In fact, in April 2011, at the height of the birther craze, Hannity sat down with Trump for a softball interview and asked him what his "team of investigators in Hawaii" had come up with regarding Obama's birth certificate. (SPOILER: nothing, because there was nothing to find and the "investigators" very likely didn't exist.)

The hypocrisy of FOX News and the GOP collaboration can't be lost on media observers as the GOP votes to censor/ban CNN and NBC if they don't agree to drop the Clinton documentary.

FOX appears comfortable with media censorship, since they long ago dropped all pretenses of being anything more than the loony right's (Tea Party, birthers etc.) mouthpiece.

The spectacle of the far right shooting itself in the foot yet again is amazing to watch......and I must say, entertaining. Ha!

houghtam 08-20-2013 02:56 PM

Anyone who thinks the hypocrisy of the right with regard to Obama's birth certificate and eligibility for the presidency vs. Cruz's will be missed by those who vote is clueless. He probably never would have gotten the nomination regardless, but now he's got no chance.

Rigs11 08-20-2013 09:01 PM

Hillary in a landslide.

Chris Christie also has no chance, as he "dared" to call out the party-towing Republicans. If the Republicans don't start identifying a candidate with a legitimate shot, Hillary will win...

If that's the only hope we have left, then we truly have no hope.

gyldenlove 08-22-2013 10:31 AM

Cruz is still a Canadian citizen, however he has stated he is in the process of filing papers to give up his Canadian citizenship which should take him about 6-12 months to do.

Rohirrim 08-22-2013 10:54 AM

In one way, it's kind of funny. Our government massively violates the 4th amendment and pretty much takes a **** all over the Constitution, and we're worried about where some presidential candidate was born? Ha!

If he's ever held duel citizenship then he cannot apply for the job. Whihc was also the argument against the current President.

This is untrue.

Some countries assume you as a citizen whenever one of your parents is. I think Mexico is that way.

So I guess you'd have to also say that Americans with Mexican parents are ineligible to run for President? Or wait, since Mexico assumes children born to Mexicans are Mexicans, then even their kids would be assumed Mexicans too. Well I guess most latinos in the Southwest are off the list then. :)

Congressional Acts define it.

How convenient for Obama

Hawaii official who confirmed Obama birth certificate dies in crash

Lorretta Fuddy was killed after a small plane with nine people aboard crashed into the water off the Hawaiian island of Molokai

CNN) -- Loretta Fuddy, the Hawaii official who confirmed the authenticity of President Obama's birth record in Hawaii, died Wednesday night in a small-plane crash.

The aircraft, with nine passengers on board, crashed into the ocean about a mile off Kalaupapa, Molokai, on Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The other eight people survived, Petty Officer Stephen Woodbury said. One person swam ashore, a Maui Fire Department helicopter picked up four, and a Coast Guard helicopter rescued three.

Fuddy was director of the state's health department.

"Our hearts are broken," Gov. Neil Abercrombie said in a prepared statement. "Loretta was deeply loved and respected. She was selfless, utterly dedicated and committed to her colleagues in the Department of Health and to the people of Hawaii. Her knowledge was vast; her counsel and advice always given from her heart as much as from her storehouse of experience."

In April 2011, Fuddy confirmed Obama's "long form" birth certificate as part of the state's effort to put to rest questions about whether he was really born in the United States.

"I have seen the original records filed at the Department of Health and attest to the authenticity of the certified copies the department provided to the President that further prove the fact that he was born in Hawaii," she said at the time.

A biography at hawaiihealthconnector.com said she was a recognized leader in the public health field and won numerous awards for her work. Her hobbies included singing in a church choir, "enjoying her cat Flint, and spending time with her grand nieces and nephews."

The Democrats cried fowl when they found out how money Romney spent on his campaign and how much he had available to spend including his own personal wealth.

It will be interesting to see if the democrats will take the same stance when Bill and Hillary pull out all the stops and break every record on campaign spending, it will make what Romney spent look like peanuts. Bill will pound the campaign trail and pull out the big guns and hold them to the heads of all that received special favors while he was in office. The rich Hollywood liberals will go wild at the thought of Bill and Hillary back in White House and the open door lavish parties that will be held.

The good thing is they remember how they got there and will open the back door and throw out the scraps to the peasants ..... food stamps, welfare and unlimited unemployment for all.

Do you find it ironic that Hillary has never done anything on her own but has always rode Bill's coattail?

She started out wanting to live in DC but after failing the District of Columbia bar exam, she decided to marry Bill Clinton and follow him to Arkansas. She did pass the Arkansas bar exam...... and now it's on to the White House.

The early Arkansas years of Bill and Hillary would make a great Duck Dynasty season.

Does anyone find it ironic that someone that has never done anything, would complain about someone who has succeeded in becoming a lawyer, ran a successful bid to become a U.S. Senator. Became a well loved/approved sec. In Obama's administration, which had nothing to do with Clinton. OH and she'll be the next president if she decides to run.

She didn't do any of that on her own. You would have never heard of her if she didn't ride Bill's coattails.

I'm seeing a lot of sour grapes. Have whatever opinion you want,it doesn't change the fact that she is well accomplished on her own rights. Trying to demean her accomplishments by insinuating she needed bill Clinton doesn't lessen anything. I get it,you don't like Hillary, your best chance at beating her in 2016 is going down in flames as we speak. Your post does more to belittle you then Hillary Clinton.

barryr 01-11-2014 05:38 AM

Hillary needed Billy's name to get political positions, but yet people will stupidly think she is some great role model for women. Condi Rice really did it all by herself and a black woman to boot, and if was a democrat, they'd try to put her head on Mt. Rushmore. But because she is that evil republican, racist cartoons of her are even tolerated. But oh those liberal democrats are so open-minded and objective. What bozos.
