Q. Smith fluff piece by Peter King

The Smith story is a strange one. He burst onto the national scene last season when Western Kentucky traveled to play the best team in the country, Alabama, on Sept. 8. Smith got three sacks against the Tide, the first coming directly over the man who would be the 11th pick in the 2013 draft (by San Diego), tackle D.J. Fluker. Actually, the first sack came on a speed rush around Fluker. The second came on a power move, when Smith powered through guard Chance Warmack and Alabama tackle Cyrun Kouandjio and flattened quarterback A.J. McCarron. A speed moveólots of rushers can be one-trick ponies and get a few sacks. But the ability to use power, particularly against a guard like Warmack, seen by many as the best this yearís the draft, is impressive.

And itís that second one, the power/changeup move, that made some scouts fall in love with Smith. He was on his way to first-round contention, leading the nation in sacks with 12.5, when his left knee caved in against Louisiana in November. He tore his ACL, and Dr. James Andrews operated late that month. Now it was a race to draft day.

Quanterus is an interesting guy.

Hoping he can be our next Elvis, midround but somehow top-shelf pass-rusher, but obviously the odds are stacked against that.

Those 3 sacks were indeed sick...top level stuff against top level competition. The question is if that was a flash....or evidence of things to come

I'm a firm believer that guys who can play football can just play football.

...whether or not their measurables or practice game or ______ really give them a chance to show it, that remains to be seen.

Guys like Elvis and Woodyard that dominated in college against solid to top competition. Those guys were big time contributors in their ROOKIE years. Crazy that a guy that looks and runs like Tarzan gets so much extra time and attention.

Honestly I think that speaks to the arrogance of coaching at the NFL level.

Two things stand out from his college highlights. He sheds blockers extremely well. Sure you can be coached up, but great pass rushers instinctively know how to use their hands to disengage the blocker and quickly identify the location of the QB. The 2nd thing is that he has a really nifty dip move off of the edge. Hopefully, that explosiveness will make the transition to the NFL and post injury.

I'm not worried about him transitioning to the NFL, just worried that he can stay healthy or not.

I agree. Many minds on the pro level convince themselves of the value of measurables over simply being able to play the game well. The arrogance that with that athletic slate they can craft football monsters. I am glad that there seems to be some focus in Denver on attaining players with high Football acumen, or those that have shown themselves to be highly coach-able.

Shanahan, as great of an football mind as he has, is a victim of this arrogance (though he is looking much better these days).

i wanna see him add more bulk to his frame but if healthy he's definitely a NFL pass rusher.

Med...give us the scoop on your boy.

King doesn't have my player evaluation or draft acumen.

KipCorrington25 07-26-2013 06:59 PM

This sounds a little like King's Adrian Madise write up. Hilarious!

Harvitz81 07-26-2013 07:23 PM

This was the guy that Med was high on predraft right?

Hope he can contribute this year.

Med was high on him BMORE was blowing him. I'm surprised he hasn't been on the thread yet to say "This was my guy! It was me that said that please stroke me a bit!"

Your blatant misuse of established memes is disturbing.

Why against?

Both lead the nation in sacks senior year (Q was leading when hurt in Week 9)(Von led as a senior, too) ... Both undervalued 5th round sack-masters from small-ish Kentucky schools. My boy has superior physical tools, though.

I've said much of this myself, though it seems more a "group-think" that said 'Elvis too small.'

You're either born to sack, or you're not. Elvis, Quanterus and Von were, and - no matter how high they were drafted - Aaron Curry, DJ Williams and Robert Ayers were not. Former three led the nation in sacks, latter three all had skimpy sack totals in college.

I think you are right, especially about pass rushers. If you can dominate sacking the QB in college that usually translates to the NFL as well.

Doom was selected in the 4th round.
