Broncos' best and worst contracts

Welker best, Mays (with honorable mention to Kuper) worst. Good write-up.

Overall, Denver is in good shape contract wise. The Mays contract was pretty bad, but still nothing compared to some of the terrible decisions that other franchises have made (like the Jets giving David Harris 25 million guaranteed, or the Bills giving an injured past his prime Mario Williams a 96 million dollar contract.)

Kuper has always been overpaid, with his salary closer to the top quarter of the league while his play at best would be average
That's such a bunch of crap. Kuper plays at a high level. He was voted as an alternate to the pro bowl only playing in a handful of games. He's very good. Considering what he would have got on the open market, they are lucky it's as friendly as it is for a player with injuries the last year.

wonder what are the top teams contract wise over the entire roster.

Agreed. It's no question. A healthy Kuper is one of the best guards in the league. Let's see some of these people get their ankle twisted 90 degrees and see if they can even have the nerve to get up in the morning.

Good read. That Mays contract is bonkers, not sure what they were thinking there

DBroncos4life 07-09-2013 10:32 AM

I kind of hope that Joe Mays just had a really hard time picking up the language of JDR's D last year and a second year in the system will help. He wasn't horrible in 2011 as a two down MLB. It would be nice if he could return to that.

Imagine what were going to pay von O.O

I don't think he makes the team so it won't really matter.

There's no way Mays is on this team after camp cuts. I was going to say Kuper would be on the bubble just because of the LV signing but with Walton having gone down, they might give Kupes a look at Center when he's ready to go.

07-09-2013 11:47 AM

Kuper is never going to play center

07-09-2013 11:49 AM

Why would we cut Kuper? We aren't cap strapped. Right Bacon Bacon?

Kaylore 07-09-2013 12:37 PM

Honestly as far as bad contracts go, this isn't that bad. Mays is obviously the worst, but beyond that, this front office has done a good job not signing players to something that will quickly get out of hand. There are some other teams that are sitting on pretty bad contracts out there. If they can be used as a point of reference, this isn't too bad.

Also, Bacon.

The only resson to cut him would be for a roster spot. Even then you could just PUP him to avoid cutting him. So cutting him should be out of the question.

Von and J.J. Watt will be the highest paid defense players in NFL history, sooner rather than later. Especially after Von absolutely crushes it next year, which I think he will.

Not just "great year Von" crushes it, but all-time great LT like single season performance. Just have a feeling.

Also the $4.5 million in cash they wouldn't have to pay him...

Do we need money?

I'm not saying they "need" money or will cut him only because of money. Just saying that they do have an operating budget and that money would be a factor in any decision they could possibly make to cut him.

07-09-2013 01:23 PM

I was all for cutting Kuper early in the offseason but might as well keep him for now.
