Why Julius Thomas Should Be a Starter Next Year
Third-year TE Could Make Huge Impact for Broncos

COMMENTARY | In recent years, the position of tight end in the NFL has undergone a drastic makeover. No longer is a tight end simply an extension of the offensive line or a slightly larger target for the quarterback to check down for a quick completion. Tight ends like Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates began a positional renaissance over a decade ago and with the emergence of athletes like Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Vernon Davis, and others around the league, tight ends now provide offenses with enormous coverage mismatches nearly every week of the season.

For the Denver Broncos, expectations on offense are sky high entering the 2013 season. With quarterback Peyton Manning and a strong corps of wide receivers including Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, and Wes Welker, the Broncos passing attack will look for another record breaking season, and by taking advantage of potential mismatches with a tight end might be exactly what the team needs to take another big step toward the Super Bowl.

Enter Julius Thomas.

Said it a bazillion times. If this guy lives up to the hype and Montee Ball goes HAM, our offense is going to rival the 98 team. Might even be better.

Only because the game has changed.

that's a bold statement but it might be a true one if it all pans out.
really need Thomas to break out into a star. that would put this offense on steroids(without the side effects)

Shannon sharpe says hello.

agreed. homerism aside, the '98 team was one of the best/most dominant teams in league history. if they had played in NY, Pitt, Chi, or NE instead of what many ppl see as fly over country, they would probably be recognized as such

iirc, TD missed the equivalent of 8 quarters because Denver was up so much by the 4th in games and he still put up those numbers.

The Orange Julius hype train continues.

Of course until exactly 100+ articles are written about a player who has never started, it's not hype, per errand.

I wonder how much Yahoo! paid for that content.

It's bold, but not that farfetched if it pans out.

We have a HOF QB, a solid O-Line, three great WR's as opposed to two in 98. All we're really missing is a stud TE and RB. We had Sharpe and Davis back in the day. So living up to that is a lot to ask for. If Thomas breaks out though and Montee turns into a 4.8-5 ypc beast, then we have a shot to equal or surpass the 98 team.

We actually put up 20 less points last year (481) 98 team in points scored (501). Granted, we did wind things down a lot in 98 because Shanahan wasn't the type of coach who liked to rub things in and pile it on.

As Rev said, the game has changed, but for a passing league we look to be in good shape.

So this is something new? Kellen Winslow played 30 years ago.

The same people that nix the Julius Thomas hype are accepting without question the Monte Ball hype. Funny stuff.

Well, Ball has had nothing but a track record of success. Orange Julius has never really had any measurable success, just potential

Tebow had a fair amount of success too, in college

Knowshone Moreno was a beast in college.

He's looked really good in practice. Then again, so did Orton.

What's that have to do you your statement about Ball and Thomas hype? Sure Tebow is one of the greatest college players ever but all the scouts knew he couldn't throw. Orange Julius has never produced on the football field... ever.

I am not saying OJ is going to flame out. I am just saying.

I am saying hype is hype either one or both could crash and burn or shine.

How can you accept one player's hype and ridicule the other's hype.

Because one hype is backed up with production while the other hype is not really backed up by anything.

The success or failure of Julius Thomas does not depend on his pass catching ability, rather his development in blocking and staying healthy. Can he beat out Tamme as the pass catching tight end on this team? I don't know if he's there yet. He certainly is not ready to fill the shoes of a blocking tight end like Dreesen. How many tight ends do we keep with a roster this deep?

I'm rooting for the kid as I've watched him in training camp for a couple years now- he definitely flashes. We might see a surprise cut at TE after the roster is finalized....

Dedhed 06-15-2013 01:10 PM

I don't understand why it's considered hype to report that he's looked like the best TE in practices and that he has a higher ceiling than the other TEs on the roster.

06-15-2013 01:17 PM

Hype and offseason go hand in hand. Right now its an excitement around Julius based on his offseason with nothing coming from an actual season. 1 catch for 5 yards can't really back up all the excitement/articles about his offseason so far so its referred to as hype. He can back it up come week 1 and cement all the praises though, turning the hype into reality.
