OT- Word and number jumble.

I have seen this with all the letters messed up but never with numbers. I am amazed that the human brain is not only able to unscramble it but get faster at reading it as you go.

It makes me wonder why we have not done more brain mapping. One would think that if the brain can simply look at one of these and unscramble it there should be a way to relate this to learning a new language . Imagine being able to just pick up and read a new language in seconds. It has to be possible.

What?

The key is the 3rd line and "how our minds can" is so clear. Once you see these 4 words, the entire message becomes much more readable.

Easy, it is just basic pattern recognition, something the human mind is very good at. It is similar to how you can read a text with severe typos as long as the first few letters of each word is right.

This is easier to read, than some Facebook posts I've seen...

That was no different than deciphering one of Spider's old posts.

I agree. I reread the first line and then by the third line, my brain hit the trigger switch and I read it pretty quickly. In fact, I didn't even realize that the 3rd line was almost all in order and in English without significant numbers (zero and O are pretty easy to confuse) until you mentioned it. I am great but my mind/brain is better.

I was thinking if we all read Josina's tweets, we can all get this one easy!

Yeah. Just because we can do this (most people) doesn't mean that we should be able to "learn" languages easier simply by reading them. It is a completely different type of process that involves a lot of skills. That is why it is stressed for people to be able to get their kids enrolled in foreign language programs as soon as elementary school. Wish I would have been able to before 6th grade.

So lets say instead of replacing letters with numbers you replaced them with symbols or letters from the language you are learning. Wouldn't the brain start to associate the two together ?

broncosteven 04-24-2013 03:10 PM

All it really was was replacing letters with numbers, things we in IT have been doing to create passwords for decades.

Nothing that would relate to learning a new language faster.
