10 years later: Denver Broncos 2003 draft picks

Where are they now?

1 (20) - George Foster, OT, Georgia
2 (51) - Terry Pierce, LB, Kansas
4 (108) - Quentin Griffin, RB, Oklahoma
4 (114) - Nick Eason, DE, Clemson
4 (128) - Bryant McNeal, DE, Clemson
5 (157) - Ben Claxton, OG, Mississippi
5 (158) - Adrian Madise, WR, Texas Christian
6 (194) - Aaron Hunt, DE, Texas Tech
7 (227) - Clint Mitchell, DE, Florida
7 (235) - Ahmaad Galloway, RB, Alabama

Interesting......4 DEs taken, 2 of them from Clemson in the same round. Guess Shanny was trying to get the next Trevor Pryce.

In 2008, Quentin Griffin signed a one-year plus an option year contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He was released by the Roughriders on June 20, 2008, following the team's final preseason game. According to media reports, Roughriders' head coach Ken Miller was "so upset with Griffin following (the game) that he cut the former NFLer at the airport." Griffin had reportedly "pulled himself out of the game early in the second quarter, telling the coaches 'he didn't have any interest in playing a preseason game where he might get hurt'."

the 2003 nfl draft was disaster. just look at the first round for every team

eddie mac 03-26-2013 07:09 AM

Eason is the only guy still in the league, or was last year anyway with the Cards.

Kaylore 03-26-2013 07:13 AM

I was going to say, I'm a pretty big critic of Shanahan as a GM, but the 2003 draft class was one of the worst in the last ten years for everyone.

George Foster still plays for the Saints.

No he doesn't. He hasn't made a team in three years.

Its amazing how that happens every now and then, and as usual most of us were excited about the prospects leading up to that draft... never know for sure in this game.

Smiling Assassin27 03-26-2013 07:59 AM

I remember people buzzing about Madise dominating in OTA's...good times...

Holy ****. Wikipedia is WRONG!!!!!! Yikes!

It says he signed with the Saints in 2011.

I remember this draft well. That Saturday was a beautiful day in Denver and consequently I was not inside watching the draft, I was out doing something with my girlfriend and I was checking in on the draft everyonce in a while on the radio. Needless to say, I was scratching my head with the first pick wondering who in the heck was George Foster? I remember thinking why an OT and why him? Then the Terry Pierce pick and I was all, "this is an 'up yours' pick pointing at Al Wilson."

I pretty much tuned the rest of the draft out at that point.

TheReverend 03-26-2013 08:18 AM

I remember being CRAZY excited about the Denverbroncos.com fluff pieces about Galloway.

I think Ben Claxton went on to dominate NFL Europe

OK, here are some disasterous picks... not:

Carson Palmer (not bad all things considered)
Andre Johnson
Bryon Leftwich (did ok for a few years, servicable QB)
Jordon Gross (solid)
Kevin Williams (solid, good DT)
Terrell Suggs
Marcus Trufant
Ty Warren
Troy Palamalu
Willis McGahee
Dallas Clarke
Larry Johnson (had a few real good years)
Nick Barnett
Nnamdi Asomugha

So while there are some real stinkers, there's also some excellent players.

ludo21 03-26-2013 09:12 AM

Suggs is the guy who dropped big time... loved the guy coming out of ASU..

Quentin was well worth the pick just for the Colts reg season game I would say... so much fun to watch that one

Suggs was like Moore from A/M this year. He had a slow combine time but very productive college career.

No way in hell was Foster a 1st round pick. He was picked as a future stud and FO and Shanahan knew he was a raw player needing his golden touch. BS! Such a waste of a first rounder. The "Swinging Door" was best positioned at a old style saloon entrance more than a front offensive line.

SoCalBronco 03-26-2013 09:52 AM

I remember being furious we took Claxton when Dorsey was still on the board. And then when we cut Claxton before camp I was even more pissed. :)

Doresy couldn't hit the end zone with a throw if he was standing on the 10 yard line.....

Denver Bronco56 03-26-2013 11:56 AM

I remember wanting Terry Pierce to pan out... seems like after Al Wilson getting hurt and the move of DJ to SLB and the loss of Gold... we have been trying to find good LBs(minus Miller)

Dj's Skillset of being able to play all LB positions which stunted his development in being an allstar at one position instead of a jack of all trades, the injury to Al who was the heart and sole and loss of Gold who could run with anyone was the last time i remember us having a DOMINATE Defense prior to last season.

Yeah he has had quite a career. Got himself a SB ring as well.

Eh, looking through the draft, there seem to be a larger number of high draft busts, but over all, the 2003 draft had about as much talent as most of the other early 00's drafts. But , yeah, the top 10 of the 2003 draft is pretty brutal.

TJ liked him. ;D

The book on Foster was finally revealed by Tom Nalen on ESPN radio. He apparently had a wrist injury that his agent told him to keep quiet about. It got around, but not to Shanny for some reason and he was drafted where he was - probably out of panic. Nails was saying his hand never got better and he was surprised he played as long as he did.

I remember seeing how horrid he was every week and I got so tired of it I made a signature that said "Get Foster off the roster!" and featured Foster's face being flushed down a toilet. I don't remember why, but Taco really liked Foster for some reason (it wasn't his play) and so he retaliated and made a similar signature that said "Get Khan off the John." Foster was out of football two years later.

The only reason he played here as long as he did was because Shanahan was covering up what a bad pick he was. That always made me really mad. It's one thing to be a bad GM, but if a pick busts, move on. Don't let him start ahead of better players because of your ego. If Shanahan hadn't drafted him but was given him by another GM, he wouldn't have ever played him.
