DOOM: Does it bother you that...

the Broncos are the only 4-3 team offering a contract? The other two teams that are in the running are the Steelers and Ravens. Concerned that he's not really a good fit as a 4-3 end?

Rabb 03-20-2013 11:45 AM

****ing sigh

Are you too dumb to realize that Doom would play OLB in a 3-4 and not DE in it?

DBroncos4life 03-20-2013 11:51 AM

I think he is bothered by the fact that he is worth less on the market then then the offer he F'd up.

Tombstone RJ 03-20-2013 11:51 AM

Dooms best sack numbers were produced as a 3-4 OLB...

cmhargrove 03-20-2013 11:58 AM

We were a top 5 defense last year, and if I remember correctly we were tied for the league lead in total sacks as a defense. Do you really want to take away key pieces of that, or would you rather add to it?

D-tackle could be improved, MLB could definitely be improved, safety could be improved.

Remember that if our free safety had properly judged one solitary pass we wouldn't be having this discussion. Keep Dumervil if at all possible, fix the other stuff and we could be epic this year.

Mogulseeker 03-20-2013 11:58 AM

1 - Doom is probably a better 3-4 LB than he is a 4-3 DE.
2 - The way Doom is utilized in Fox's system, he might as well be a pass-rushing 3-4 OLB...
3 - When you have 3 300+lbers (Wolfe, Vickerson Knighton) lining up over center and Doom lining up wide, and sometimes even off the line, he's basically a 3-4 linebacker.

The Broncos sort of run a "pseudo-43" defense. I'd call it a hybrid 4-3/3-4.

I think he could potentially be more successful with the Steelers/Ravens than with the Broncos. But Denver has a better shot at winning it all next year, and the city of Denver>Pittsburgh>Baltimore.

This. To all that continue to claim he's miscast in our 4-3

Weren't most of his sacks with a hand on the ground. 4-3 3-4 is a very vague term. The 4-3 under that Denver runs is a 3-4 for all intents and purposes. Doom plays like a 3-4 OLB and plays wide 9 some too. OM plays a lot of madden.

A lot of them, yeah. Even in the "3-4", but you're absolutely right about the 4-3 Under.... the Broncos use their three other linemen basically as DTs - LE over RT, NT over RG/C, UT over LG/LT, with Doom rushing wide.

I love this defense, and if we can start to generate pressure up the middle, esp. with Doom and Von on the outside, it can be very dominant.

Denver724 03-20-2013 12:29 PM

I keep hearing how he is such a liability against the run and was wondering if our D would be better with a more typical 4-3 end (Abraham).

Sounds like most think we will be fine.

I was just curious after seeing what teams were interested

NFLBRONCO 03-20-2013 12:31 PM

The bottom line is that the other three linemen on the Broncos are fatbodies that could play the same position in the 3-4, and although they use Doom is strictly a passrusher, his role in the Broncos D isn't much difference from what he would play in a 3-4.

In fact, I don't know what I'd call the Broncos D. Like a previous poster said, for all intents and purposes, the Broncos D is a 3-4.

That's why his contract seems "out of whack" now ... McD and Xanders paid him as the All-Pro 3-4 league leader in sacks he was, looking for all the world like a smaller DeMarcus Ware or a non-steroidal Shawn Merriman. From that perspective the deal wasn't all that crazy. The missed 2010 season is a big gap, and that gap lends credence to the "out of whack" label.

Actually, 2009 is the ONLY season he EVER played in a 3-4. Makes you wonder what might have been. Hope we don't find out this year.

I think the point that many of the posters in this thread are bringing up, is that he is still pretty much a 3-4 linebacker in Fox's system. His role hasn't changed much, although I'd say he drops back in coverage a lot less.

His hand is on the ground .... that's not a linebacker.

What's with all the label-swapping in here - not from the team or media, it seems like just here. Yesterday I'm assured Von Miller is actually a DE on passing downs, and today I'm told Elvis is actually a 3-4 linebacker. Marius, your "Under" description lumps Von Miller in with the "fatbodies," if you believe the others who say he''s a DE on passing downs.

Let's keep it simple ... LB Von steps up across from an OT on some passing downs, and DE Elvis swings out a bit wider on some passing downs.

ColoradoDarin 03-20-2013 01:25 PM

Didn't Elvis get all of his 17 sacks with his hand on the ground when we ran the 3-4 that year?

Great post. I have tried to convey this very thought several times. Doom is in essence a 3-4 pass rushing WOLB. Our scheme two gaps Vickerson, Knighton, Wolfe, and our LBs flow to the ball. It protects and hides our undersized LBs but accentuates Doom and Miller off the edge.
