Future purge?

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/ja...l-or-bust-mode

What does he mean by a future purge like the Ravens and Steelers are going through now? The contracts they're giving out aren't long ones with huge money. Other than Manning and Bailey coming to the end of their careers eventually, and Dumervil (who could get cut this week), who would they have to purge in a few years?

BMarsh615 03-14-2013 10:09 AM

Beadles, DT, Decker, Von, and Chris Harris could become expensive. We will probably lose two of them.

OBF1 03-14-2013 10:14 AM

You over value the greatness of your Bronco players. Von Miller and maybe DT

That is not true. Not even close.

I'm sick of hearing about the manning window being only two years because of his neck injury and age. His neck injury is completely healed, the issue is how much nerve regeneration will improve from here on out. And as far as the issue of age, Favre played until 41 and Brady just came out saying he wants to keep playing into his 40s. As long as they keep manning protected, who's to say the window isn't 5 more years (until he reaches 41)?

Actions speak louder than words. It seems like the Broncos are going all out for two years, which also happens to reflect the guarantees in Peyton's contract. Perhaps he only wants to play two more years? Who knows, but it seems like they are going all out for 2 years, then cross that bridge when the time comes.

DT is making $800,000, Harris is making $500,000 (will be a RFA next year), Decker is making $1.13M this year, Beadles is making $600,000, Von is making $2.3M... Both Decker and Beadles are UFA's next year, and Von, Chris Harris and DT will be UFA's in 2015.

A big reason why we have had so much cap room is because the bulk of our roster is playing out rookie contracts. Von is going to break the bank (will probably become the highest paid defensive player in NFL history) and DT is going to command big money as well.

We won't be able to keep all of our young players.

The answer to your question is: no one

If the Broncos cut Mays, Dumervil, and Kuper...they will be sitting pretty in 2013, 2014.

I have calculated the 2014 cap, while including $10M for Clady, $4M for Decker, $4M for Beadles, $3M for Walton, $3M for Ayers, a $1.32M RFA tender for Chris Harris...and keeping everyone else. Even with all of that, the Broncos are only $3M too high in 2014, which can easily be taken care of by cutting Matt Prater (or any other contracts adding up to $3M).

By 2015, the cap should be at least $132M (raising $3M per year). If Champ wishes to keep playing, the Broncos can re-sign him in Free Agency to a small contract, and keep rolling until the end of Manning's contract (2016) if they want.

You won't see the Broncos overpaying anymore for players like McDaniels did with almost every single one of his signings (including Dumervil).

Beadles is a G and not an elite one, Decker is solid, not elite, Harris is not gonna get paid a ton. DT and Von are the only two who will be expensive and neither is leaving Denver.

The Broncos will be able to keep EVERYONE. Demaryius Thomas, and Von Miller don't hit Free Agency until 2015. Manning's contract ends in 2016. Even if Manning plays in 2015/2016 (which I doubt), the Broncos can afford to franchise DT, and sign Von Miller with a minimal cap hit in 2015 (for example)

The Broncos can even choose to restructure Manning if they want to free up more money in the short-term. The reality is, right now, the Broncos don't have any players under contract past 2014 who makes more than $6M per year (except Manning) if they cut Dumervil. This gives them ultimate flexibility in choosing whatever they want to do in Free Agency, and the draft.

Atwater His Ass 03-14-2013 10:55 AM

There won't be a purge per se, but there will be constant shuffling of the roster with these short term deals being given out.

I like what the FO is doing this off-season, but they will have to stay sharp to keep rotating players and not lose productivity.

RunSilentRunDeep 03-14-2013 11:00 AM

Is this the same Jason LaConfora that hinted Champ Bailey was going to be cut a month ago? The Broncos haven't done one deal that mortgages the future.

DT is worth 8-10 mil a year, Decker is worth 5 or 6M, Harris is worth 6 or 8M, Beadles is worth 5 or 6M, and Von is worth at least 15 mil a year...

We are paying these guys $5,300,000 COMBINED this year when they are worth close to $40,000,000 in salary per year. Then you got guys like Woodyard (UFA next year), Orlando Franklin and Rahim Moore (UFA's the same year DT and Von become UFA's) who need to be paid as well.

I tend to agree with this

BroncoMan4ever 03-14-2013 11:19 AM

even with these deals we are seeing that Elway may be an even better executive than he was a player. he is setting this team up to dominate the next 2 years, but isn't mortgaging a decade in the process.

he has set it up to go for the Lombardi the next 2 years with Peyton and give the opportunity to ride off into the sunset the undisputed greatest ever. however i believe he and the rest of the front office has it in their minds, if in 2 years it hasn't happened it isn't going to with Peyton and it will be time to move on with Osweiler.

this team while being setup to beast mode the next 2 seasons also has contingencies in place to ensure that in 2 years when it is Osweiler's time, he isn't inheriting nothing. Doom probably gone, Champ probably gone if not he is here on a much smaller deal, Manning gone, Kuper probably gone, the majority of our big money guys will be out the door with no money owed and a really good cap situation.

right now we have Clady who will get paid, and Peyton has in the past restructured for the good of his team. next year Decker and Beadles are due. Decker will get paid good, probably in the 5 million a season range. he isn't going to break the bank. Beadles might get a deal like Kupe did a few years ago, again it isn't going to be massive.

the following year Manning is probably out. Champ's deal is done same with Kupe if he is still in Denver, Doom is probably gone. and all but Vasquez from our FA signings the past 2 days will be elsewhere or trying to get a new deal done in Denver. the endings of these deals will give Denver the flexibility to sign DT, Von, and Harris.

add in the draft picks of the Elway regime and this team is going to be fine in 2 years. there might be a lull in the overall record when we transition QBs but for the most part, we will be set up to be a good team for years beyond the next 2

Yeah, but Manning and Bailey should come off the books in the next two years. That leaves us with at least 30 mil to resign them also depending on how much Doom wants to restructure. I agree DT will be around 8, Deck will be 5, Beadles will get 5, Harris will get 5-6, and Von will get 15. That gives us about 40 mil which is in the broncos range.

Swedish Extrovert 03-14-2013 11:20 AM

I will lose it if we lose Von Miller.

unless the Broncos want to cut ties with him, he's pretty tied up for a while.

Requiem 03-14-2013 11:23 AM

Have you looked at how many FA's we have for 2014 and 2015? Tons. A lot of scrubs. A lot of the big $ guys will be off the books by then (assuming Champ, Peyton, Dumervil and Kuper are not here in two years -- and if they are, much cheaper). We will be more than fine. Lol.

broncosteven 03-14-2013 11:25 AM

Why worry about 2 years from now when we haven't played a down with the 2013 squad?

Requiem 03-14-2013 11:29 AM

Someone should send La Canfora the link with: 2014 and 2015 Cap Status.

We are in GREAT shape. Lol!

1. DT's contract is up 2 years from now, then we can franchise him. Not worth $10M per year, we can just draft another WR.
2. Decker is not worth the same as Welker (the most productive WR in the NFL).
3. Harris is a Nickel CB, and not close to worth $8M per year. You're out of your mind.
4. I already factored in Beadles at $4M-$5M per year.
5. The Broncos won't be signing Von Miller to $15M per year in 2015, and if they do, he won't last long under that contract.

The Broncos are finally almost at the point where they can draft BPA. The only player on the roster who is not replaceable is the elite QB. Elway has made it pretty obvious, that if you're trying to 'break the bank', unless you're Peyton Manning, you can play somewhere else.

BMarsh615 03-14-2013 11:40 AM

And I don't think cutting Doom is a good solution to our cap problems. We would still have to find another pass rusher to replace him for the long term... That will be hard to do with where we are picking and if we can't find one through the draft we will have to pay for one in free agency anyways.

Having two elite passrushers is what makes our defense special. Sure, Freeney will be a nice, relatively cheap, short term solution but teams will be able to shut our passrush out if we don't have another pass rushing option besides Von.

this is so far off the mark, imo. How is Denver going to 'just draft' a WR nearly as talented and as much a physical speciman as DT? No offense, dude. But I think you are putting the cart way ahead of the horse on these projections. But this is the most glaring.

Requiem 03-14-2013 11:43 AM

You extend Thomas before he even becomes a FA if he bosses like he did this year. A ton of reasons why that is the best move.
