La Canfora: Champ may not be with Broncos in '13

I don't see it this way, not even remotely... just wonder if he knows something we don't.

Perhaps more speculation than anything?

razorwire77 02-06-2013 12:46 PM

Champ will restructure. He's got a ton of money, he's been part of the community for a decade and he's on a team in a weak division that's built for a run. Sure he could probably sign with a dump franchise like the Jags or Bills for a bit more scratch, but what's the point? If anything, I could see him getting moved to be more of a big nickel DB that you move into the box and ball hawk shallow crossing routes digs etc.

cutthemdown 02-06-2013 12:48 PM

Champ isn't really better then Harris at this point anymore. At some point is he worth what he is getting paid? I think Champ should take a big pay cut to stay and try to win a Superbowl. Broncos paid him well, he's at the end, he is missing a ring. Champ should say he will play for about 3 million a yr, use the rest to go out and get more help, win this thing.

If Champ, after how he played in playoffs, not willing to take a big pay cut to help team I then question how important winning it all is to him.

The list of CB's that could be cut is epic. With the deep rookie class this might be a bad year to be making more then 5 million a season at CB. Eric Wright, Dunta Robinson, Carlos Rodgers, Charles Woodson, Champ Bailey, and Chris Gamble could join a pretty deep free agent class.

Champ will be with the Broncos next year. would love to see us add Revis to pair with him but it depends on the price.

In that scenario I'd drop Mike Adams, and move Champ to SS. He's got great tackling ability.

cutthemdown 02-06-2013 01:00 PM

I don't see how broncos can pay champ that much after his pathetic playoffs and lack of big plays last couple years. If Champ won't play for say 5-6 million I say time to bite the bullet.

razorwire77 02-06-2013 01:00 PM

No way the Jets are getting a first rounder for Revis in this market.

A 10 million dollar a yr safety who is 35 yrs old? It won't happen.

They won't. He'll restructure.

ludo21 02-06-2013 01:14 PM

champ is not moving top safety....he is moving off the team!

;D

gosh i hope not, I love me some Champ

NFLBRONCO 02-06-2013 01:30 PM

Love champ

With Manning here I'd be shocked
Without Manning I could see it
He'll restructure

02-06-2013 01:46 PM

I would be pissed if they release Champ. Granted, his salary is a little steep, but it makes no sense to release a veteran who can still contribute at a high level when Manning's window may be 2-3 years to win a superbowl.

Ideally, I'd like to see Champ restructure his contract and move to safety. The Broncos have brought along Moore as the deep center fielder, but I think that position would be the ideal role for an aging Bailey. He gets to sit back and watch the play develop, reading route combinations and the quarterback. If not his permanent position, Bailey could play a role similar to Leonard/Bruton as the third safety. His tackling is solid and he still has the ability to be a huge playmaker for this defense.

We have some young talent at corner, specifically Harris, but I think the Broncos will still look to add another corner to the roster via trade or the draft. I'm not sold on Tony Carter as the second corner, mainly because of his size. His instincts and quickness are great, but it's difficult to stop a receiver that has 6 inches on you height-wise. I would cream my pants if the Broncos could acquire Revis for a reasonable price and field Revis+Harris at corner, Carter/Bolden at nickel, Champ at FS (similar role to Moore's current role), and a solid run-support safety like Carter at SS.

The next piece of speculative "breaking" news La Canfora gets right will be the first.

Bowlen has them operating on a tight budget
The old Bowlen is out of money thing again. It's complete B.S. This guy has no idea what he's talking about.

i'd drop Adams anyway, hello Matt Elam!
but you put Champ and Revis on the WR's, Moore at one of the safety spots and Elam at the other. secondary problem solved.

and yes i know it's not that easy.

Kaylore 02-06-2013 03:01 PM

La Confora is no Schefter. Some speculated once Schefter left NFL Network he would lose his big scoops. They tried to prop up La Confora as a suitable replacement and failed.

This is more about looking at contracts that have are a bit backloaded on aging players. Champ is technically included because he's in his mid thirties and getting paid like he's 25.

I'd love to see Champ move to safety some day. But there's nothing indicating to me that should be next year. Until we have two corners on the roster better than Champ Bailey, he's better for us where he is. And I just don't see that being the case next season.

UltimateHoboW/Shotgun 02-06-2013 04:00 PM

Here is the cheapest option. Restructure Champ from $11 mill to $6mill. Move Champ to FS, Q Carter at SS, Chris Harris at LCB and Tony Carter/ 1st/ 2nd round pick at RCB. Thoughts?

extralife 02-06-2013 04:04 PM

god you are all so dumb.

we're in the middle of a super bowl run. champ is a hall of fame denver bronco. he was just second team all pro.

LETS CUT HIM OR MOVE HIM TO A NEW POSITION

why?

I DUNNO IT IS LIKE A TALKING POINT ON THE RADIO SO I GUESS I HAVE TO CONSIDER IT.

wake the **** up, people. if any of this discussion happened a month ago you'd all be laughing.

RhymesayersDU 02-06-2013 04:20 PM

You. Shut up.

eddie mac 02-06-2013 04:32 PM

Who said Bowlen was tight with money?

We carried nearly $40m of cap into the 2012 season, so that's $160m total, we left $11.5m on the table so you work out how much we spent last year. 2nd highest payroll in the NFL in 2012
